Traugott Bender

Traugott Bender (born May 11, 1927 in Tübingen ; † February 5, 1979 in Karlsruhe ) was a German politician ( CDU ) and lawyer .

Life

The son of the later regional bishop of the Evangelical Church in Baden, Julius Bender, grew up in southern Baden and graduated from high school in Lahr. After his military service he studied theology and law and received his doctorate. He did his legal clerkship in Karlsruhe, and after the state examination he worked as a lawyer.

He began his political career in 1959 in the municipal council in Karlsruhe, of which he was a member until 1972. In 1964 he was elected to the state parliament of Baden-Württemberg , to which he belonged until his death in 1979 (successor Barbara Schäfer ). 1972 Prime Minister called him Hans Filbinger the Minister of Justice of Baden-Württemberg . In 1975 Bender was involved in the Stammheim wiretapping affair. On October 20, 1977, he resigned because of the terrorist suicides on the night of his death in Stammheim . Politically, he took on responsibility for ensuring that firearms could enter a penal institution unnoticed. SPD opposition leader Erhard Eppler assured the state parliament that he would not doubt the (personal) integrity of Justice Minister Traugott Bender.

In the following years, Bender devoted himself more to his legal work, but just two years later he died in Karlsruhe as a result of a stroke .

In addition to his full-time political work, Traugott Bender was active in various church offices and honorary offices: he was synodal of the Evangelical Regional Church in Baden , chairman of the board of directors of the South Baden deaconess house Nonnenweier , board of directors at the Karlsruhe deaconess house Bethlehem and chairman of the Diakonisches Werk Baden.

Honors

In 1974, a foundation was set up, the now statutory delinquent citizens for the purpose of rehabilitation interest-free loan may be granted. After his death in 1979 the foundation was named after him, since then it has been called the “Rehabilitation Fund Dr. Traugott Bender ”.

In 1981 the Baden-Württemberg state CDU donated the Traugott Bender Prize in memory of him and his work .
