Local traffic in Gelsenkirchen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Local public transport in Gelsenkirchen is provided by the means of transport omnibus , tram , light rail, as well as by S-Bahn and regional trains . (The Regional Express only stops once at the main station in Gelsenkirchen.) The transport network is determined by the special bipolar urban structure with the two centers of the old town (with the main station ) in the south and Buer in the north. The lines are primarily operated by Bochum-Gelsenkirchener Straßenbahnen AG (BOGESTRA) and in the north of the city by Vestische Straßenbahnen (Vestische). Individual bus routes crossing the city border are operated (partly as joint routes with BOGESTRA) by the Ruhrbahn , Stadtwerke Oberhausen (STOAG) and Busverkehr Rheinland (BVR) companies. Local rail passenger transport is carried out by DB Regio NRW , Abellio Rail NRW and NordWestBahn . All means of transport can be used at uniform tariffs of the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR).

history

Originally there was a dense tram network in Gelsenkirchen, the first line of which was opened by Siemens & Halske (as the forerunner of BOGESTRA ) on November 3, 1895 from the Alter Markt to Bismarck. The network reached its greatest expansion around 1950. But as early as the mid-1950s, important connections such as line 3 from Horst via the main station to Ückendorf and line 4 from Rotthausen via the old town to Wanne-Eickel were switched to bus operation. In 1984 the first urban railway tunnel was built between the ramps at Rheinelbestr. and music theater with the main train station and Neumarkt (today Heinrich-König-Platz) completed. In 1994 this tunnel was extended to the north with five more underground stations up to the Zoom Erlebniswelt ramp . It is part of a planned U21 light rail line from Buer Nord (S) - Buer Rathaus - Erle - Hauptbahnhof - Bochum in the Rhein-Ruhr light rail network , but its realization is uncertain for financial reasons.

In the northern part of the city, on the other hand, the Vestische trams , whose forerunners, the Recklinghausen trams, opened the first line in the city of Buer on May 1, 1908, from Herten via Resse. In 1982, however, the Vestische completely stopped tram traffic and replaced it with buses.

Current

Today a standard-gauge light rail and three meter-gauge tram lines operate .

The U11 line (U17 until January 2010) is the only “real” light rail line in Gelsenkirchen and is operated with B-wagons or Dockland wagons in standard gauge on its own track body with elevated platforms . It has only three stops in the Gelsenkirchen city area.

The line 107 is with meterspurigen M8D-NF 2-Niederflurwagen the Ruhr train ride and turns since June 2015 already in Metro Station Essen Central place in Bredeney. Since there are no Ruhrbahn trams operating in the Gelsenkirchen city area early on Saturday morning, BOGESTRA runs its own trams between Gelsenkirchen main station and the Trabrennbahn (city limits to Essen) at this time .

The line 301 annually transports over 7.4 million passengers (2005). It is the only tram line that runs exclusively in the Gelsenkirchen city area. It runs for the first 4.8 km in the Stadtbahn tunnel Hauptbahnhof - Zoom Erlebniswelt (formerly Ruhr-Zoo), although there is no direct connection with the local rail transport at the Gelsenkirchen-Zoo stop, but a footpath to the "Trinenkamp" tunnel station is necessary . On the surface, in the further course - between Erle Forsthaus and Middelicher Str. - the route in the street area was expanded with side platforms (as paving of the sidewalk). At Goldbergplatz / Buer Rathaus it leads approx. 100 m through a pedestrian zone , then in Beckhausen at the Buer-Süd Bf level crossing, the Winterswijk-Gelsenkirchen-Bismarck railway line (today Dorsten-Dortmund via Castrop-Rauxel Süd, also serves the Zoo stop) becomes a single track and to cross at the same level. As a special feature, it runs in Horst between Buerer Str. And Schloss Horst with the standard gauge U11 on 3-rail tracks . Since there is an electrical operating voltage of 750 V in this area (as opposed to the 600 V otherwise usual in the network), only older M6S railcars that have been converted for this purpose can currently be used on this line : The modern type NF6D low-floor trams were only allowed to Buer-Süd Bf run, as there is a risk of derailment due to the single wheel single running gear (EEF). In September 2008, the use of the Variobahn began on this line, which has now completely taken over operation.

The line 302 is the main line connecting the two centers Old Town and Buer directly. It is designed like a tram, i.e. H. it also runs on the surface between the Musiktheater and Buer Rathaus exclusively on its own track body with platforms (on the median of the four-lane Kurt-Schumacher-Strasse) and has priority at the traffic lights. As a rule, low-floor trams are used; these Variobahns enable stepless access to low platforms. However, the Veltins-Arena and Emscherstr. via no elevator (risk of vandalism or structural location on a bridge). This line is of particular importance as a feeder to the Veltins Arena . In order to be able to cope with the high volume of traffic during events, there is a 3-track parking facility north of the stop and a single control track to the south. The platforms have two tracks in each direction. The line was expanded between the main train station and Buer Rathaus on the occasion of the 2006 World Cup (or because of the increased volume of traffic). In detail, these were the following measures:

  • Renewal of the catenary and power supply to the electricity needs of NF6D- tractions to cover
  • Lowering of the elevated platform at Gelsenkirchen Hbf so that two double units can stop one behind the other
  • New software for train protection in tunnels to increase the number of trains.
  • Conversion of the Veltins-Arena stop with generous roofing and construction of a third control track north of the stop.

In the direction of Bochum via Ückendorf, this line runs in the street area (partly on the side).

Between February and July 2018, the timetable frequency between Gelsenkirchen main station and Buer Rathaus was experimentally compressed to a 5-minute cycle, Monday to Friday, in connection with the reduction of fine dust . The project was put on hold at the start of the NRW summer school holidays. The frequency increase will also be offered during rush hour in the rest of the year and beyond until the company-wide timetable change in late autumn 2019. A modification is planned for both lines: Since December 15, 2019, the 7½-minute rhythm has been in effect on weekdays and sometimes also on Saturdays at 301 and 302, which, however, is run at seven-eight-minute intervals to avoid half-minute departure times . The timetable is linked here:

In the Gelsenkirchen tram tunnels, mobile phone network reception has been technically supported since mid-2006.

In addition, in a location close to the city center (Hauptstrasse 55) there is a Bogestra depot for 35 railways, where the railcars for line 301 and a large part of line 302 are located.

omnibus

More than 30 bus routes are operated by the Bogestra, the Vestische trams, the Ruhrbahn, the BVR and the Stoag in Gelsenkirchen. Five of them are city express buses (SB). Furthermore, two lines operate during off-peak hours as a shared call taxi (AST) , the use of which must be registered in advance and costs a surcharge, and another line as a taxi bus with advance notice (no surcharge). In school transport drive used cars , often on dissimilar route than the usual lines.

In addition, private bus companies operate on individual lines (e.g. Reisedienst Nickel, Graf ) on behalf of BOGESTRA, Ruhrbahn and Vestischen. Furthermore, BOGESTRA and Vestische have been ordering new buses together since 1999 as part of the Eastern Ruhr Cooperation (KÖR) . These are characterized by common equipment features such as air conditioning and uniform coloring.

Are each one in two centers of Gelsenkirchen, ZOB namely in Buer Buer stop the Town Hall and in the old town at the main station. The bus stations in Buer Rathaus and at the main train station were extensively renovated in 2018.

BOGESTRA operates a bus depot with a main workshop in Ückendorf (Exterbruch 2) .

There is hardly any direct connection from Gelsenkirchen main train station to the Gelsenkirchen University of Applied Sciences : During lecture times, only the E99 emergency vehicle runs non-stop from the ZOB in 23 minutes at 7.39 a.m. This drives through the Vinckestr tunnel. what otherwise no public transport does. Alternatively and also in the opposite direction, bus routes 399 run in around nine minutes from Buer town hall every 10/20 minutes, or 342 with a 40-minute journey from Wanne-Eickel Hbf via Erle and Beckhausen every hour.

S-Bahn and regional trains

S-Bahn and regional trains are not of great importance for local traffic within the city of Gelsenkirchen. This depends, among other things, on the location of the train stations, e.g. B. Buer Süd and Buer Nord are located outside the Buer city center . In addition, the main train station in the old town cannot be reached from these stops. Then there is the shape of the city, which is rather longer than wide. Railways cross Gelsenkirchen mostly in an east-west direction; they are therefore less suitable for local relations.

There are the following passenger stations and stops in the city:

These stations (RE only stop at the main station) are served by the following local rail passenger transport lines:

In addition, regional trains and S-Bahn trains run at the main station at night . These have been of certain importance in the city center since the 2019/2020 timetable change, as S-Bahn line 2 via Rotthausen also stops there at night. In other directions, however, the train is not relevant.

Tickets can be purchased at all stops of the U-Stadtbahn, at the stations of the DB and at the Buer Rathaus stop (machines next to the customer center mentioned below) or in the buses and trains. In addition, there are machines at all stops of the Ruhrbahn tram line 107, which also provide timetable data. There are also the following BOGESTRA or Vestischen sales outlets:

  • Customer center Gelsenkirchen at the ZOB , station forecourt 5
  • Customer center Gelsenkirchen-Buer Rathaus, Goldbergstrasse 1

In addition, there are a large number of private sales outlets such as kiosks or tobacco shops, where tickets are also available.

The tram or light rail stations marked with a "U" may only be entered with a valid ticket. This also applies to all stops on line 107 and when using the S-Bahn and regional trains. Buses can only be boarded at the first door all day .

Outlook and planning

The most important project of the last decades for local traffic in Gelsenkirchen was certainly the planned U21 light rail . Due to a lack of financial resources, implementation of this line is no longer expected. The already built tunnel will continue to be used by the existing tram lines. The section Buer Rathaus - Buer Nord or Marler Str. Is in the 1998 public transport requirement plan of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and would connect line 302 with S-Bahn line 9 at Gelsenkirchen-Buer Nord station. However, there is currently no political will for this extension and the Council decision of April 28, 1994 to build it was repealed in 2002.

A major renovation of Horster Str. In Beckhausen and Buer, similar to that of Cranger Str. Between Erle Forsthaus and Middelicher Str., Has already started for line 301 . For this purpose, all stops including Goldbergplatz will be expanded to meet the requirements of lower floors. In addition, the short single-track section at the level of the Buer Süd Bf level crossing will be removed and the tracks will be relocated to the center of the carriageway.

A larger project for the bus sector is a new construction of the Buer Rathaus bus station according to modern criteria. The stopping bays have been created along the bus stop for line 302 to make it easier to change between trams and buses. The bus station in the south of the city (Gelsenkirchen main station) has also been renovated since autumn 2017.
