The Zoom Erlebniswelt ( spelling ZOOM Erlebniswelt ) in Gelsenkirchen is the redesigned former Ruhr Zoo . The zoo is run by Stadtwerke Gelsenkirchen , which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the city of Gelsenkirchen.

general description

Map of the zoo

The zoo is divided into four subject areas: Alaska , Africa , Asia and Grimberger Hof .

Alaska gives an insight into all four vegetation zones of the "big" model: the coastal rainforest , the tundra , the mountain region and the polar region . Special features here include the underwater glass tunnel in the sea lion enclosure, the 3,000 m² bear enclosure or the Alaska Ice Adventure , a simulated trip in an igloo on an ice floe .

Africa shows a village with domestic animals, various savannas and the rainforest . A boat trip takes you along the landscape enclosures. The design of the boats is reminiscent of the eponymous steamboat from the film African Queen .

Asia is the newest area with jungles, tigers, orangutans and fruit bats. A 1,300 meter long promenade, sometimes also at a height of 5 meters, meanders through the jungle. There is also an indoor playground and a dining area, which also offers evening opening times.

In contrast, the Grimberger Hof is home to some Central European farm animals. The Grimberger Hof themed area, designed in the style of a Westphalian farm , includes a petting zoo , a beer garden and a climbing playground.

In 2006 around three quarters of a million visitors came to the “Zoom Erlebniswelt”. The highest number of visitors in one day was around 14,000 in the 2006 summer season (as well as on Easter Monday 2007). The 1,000,000. Visitors of the year 2007 were counted at the beginning of November. In comparison, only around 250,000 people visited the former Ruhr Zoo each year before the renovation.
