Frank Baranowski (born June 17, 1962 in Gelsenkirchen ) is a German politician ( SPD ) and Lord Mayor of Gelsenkirchen since 2004 .

Life

Baranowski passed his Abitur in 1981 in Gelsenkirchen- Ückendorf . From 1981 to 1987 he studied German and history for the teaching post of secondary levels I and II at the Ruhr University in Bochum . In May 1987 he passed his first state examination and in June 1990 his second state examination.

From September 1987 to June 1988 and from August 1990 to July 1991 Baranowski taught at the Bergberufsschule Mitte in Recklinghausen. From June 1988 to June 1990 he was a trainee lawyer at the Max-Planck-Gymnasium in Gelsenkirchen. From October 1991 to May 1995 he was a research assistant for Egbert Reinhard (SPD), member of the North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament .

Baranowski has been a member of the SPD since 1978. From 1983 to 1990 he was chairman of the Gelsenkirchen Young Socialists , since 1988 a member of the board of the Gelsenkirchen SPD, of which he was elected chairman in March 2000. Baranowski was a member of the council of the city of Gelsenkirchen from October 1989 to June 1995. Since 1998 he has been a member of the state executive committee of the SPD North Rhine-Westphalia . From 1995 to 2004 he was a member of the state parliament and from May 2000 to October 2004 he was one of the deputy chairmen of the SPD parliamentary group. Since 2007 he has been the first spokesman for the newly formed Ruhr SPD.

He is a member of the ver.di trade union (formerly ÖTV).

In the Mayor election in Gelsenkirchen in October 2004, he won the runoff election against incumbent Oliver Wittke ( CDU ) after he had finished second in the first ballot. In 2009 he was confirmed with 63.9% in the office of Lord Mayor of Gelsenkirchen. In the mayoral election in 2014 he received 67.4% of the votes cast. This was the best result for an SPD candidate in North Rhine-Westphalia.

On September 16, 2019, Baranowski announced that he would not run again for the office of Lord Mayor of Gelsenkirchen in the 2020 local elections.
