Emil Friedrich Zimmermann (born April 13, 1884 in Dieburg , † February 8, 1951 in Gelsenkirchen ) was a German lawyer and politician .

Life and work

Zimmermann was born the son of a civil servant. After graduating from high school, he began studying law and political science at the universities of Gießen and Berlin , which he completed in 1905 with the first state examination and in 1909 with the second state examination. During his studies in 1902 he became a member of the Landsmannschaft Darmstadtia Gießen . He first worked as a government assessor in Darmstadt , completed a traineeship and then worked as a research assistant at the city administrations in Frankfurt am Main , Hanau and Essen . In 1912 he became a magistrate's assistant in Rendsburg .

During the Weimar Republic , Zimmermann was a member of the Westphalian Provincial Parliament from 1919 to 1920 and again from 1926 to 1932 .

Public offices

Zimmermann had been the second mayor of the city of Rendsburg since 1915. He served as Lord Mayor of the city ​​of Buer from 1919 to 1928 and was subsequently elected Lord Mayor of the city of Gelsenkirchen-Buer , which took the name Gelsenkirchen in 1930 . In 1933 he was forced into retirement by the National Socialists. In 1945 the British occupation authorities reinstated him as Lord Mayor. He held this office until 1946. In addition, he was a board member of the German and Westphalian Association of Cities.
