Theodor Machens
Theodor Machens (born October 11, 1861 in Hanover , † April 17, 1932 in Münster ) was a German administrative lawyer who served as mayor or lord mayor of Gelsenkirchen from 1900 to 1918 .
Life
Machens came from a rural background. His father was a Prussian rentmaster in Papenburg on the Ems . Machens studied law in Freiburg im Breisgau , Berlin and Göttingen . During his studies in 1882 he became a member of the Frisia Göttingen fraternity . In 1890 he married Anna Höveler from Papenburg. The marriage had four children.
Machens was mayor in Duderstadt from 1894 to 1900 . On January 12, 1900 he was elected mayor of Gelsenkirchen and was to remain so for two terms. After the merger of seven municipalities to form the city of Gelsenkirchen in 1903, Machens was given the title of "Lord Mayor".
In 1911, Machens was unanimously re-elected as Lord Mayor of Gelsenkirchen. In 1918, however, he resigned from office under pressure from the Workers 'and Soldiers' Council . He then moved with his family to Münster , where he lectured for years at the Westphalian Wilhelms University and worked as an administrative law councilor and lawyer .
Machens died at the age of 70 after a serious operation in 1932.
Services
During Machen's term in office in Gelsenkirchen, this Ruhr area city was transformed into a major city. Under Machens, many important facilities were created such as several schools, parks, the Gelsenkirchen-Rotthausen airport , the municipal hygiene institute, the slaughterhouse, the city harbor and the Gelsenkirchen section of the Rhine-Herne Canal, as well as the new regulation of inner-city traffic management.
Machensplatz at the former location of the Gelsenkirchen town hall is named after Theodor Machens.
