The fan pigeon ( Goura victoria ), also called Victoria crowned pigeon , is a species of bird from the pigeon family (Columbidae). It is one of the crowned pigeons and is very similar to other crowned pigeon species, the crowned pigeon , the red-breasted crowned pigeon and the Sclaters red-breasted crowned pigeon .

Fan pigeons were shown at London Zoo as early as 1848. Numerous zoological gardens now keep fan pigeons in their tropical halls, European zoos are endeavoring in a conservation breeding program to ensure the survival of the species that is classified by the IUCN as near threatened - potentially endangered. In the zoo animal husbandry, breeding is now very regular.

Appearance

The fan pigeon reaches a body length of 74 centimeters. Their weight averages 2.5 kilograms. It is one of the largest and heaviest recent pigeon species. There is no gender dimorphism .

As for the kind of the Krontauben characteristic, also has the compartments dove tail with a rounded springs 16, no Bürzeldrüse and no gallbladder. The featherless legs are extremely long and strong. The hood feathers, which form a fan comb, are characteristic of the species. The feathers are lined with white and spatulate at their ends. Otherwise the plumage is typical of crown pigeons. The top and sides of the body are dark gray-blue. The neck, the chest and the underside of the body, however, are dark purple. Fan pigeons have a light gray wing mirror that is lined with dark brown. The tail feathers have a light spot at their end. The beak is dark gray. The iris of the large eyes is red.

Distribution, habitat and existence

The fan pigeon occurs in two subspecies in New Guinea . Their habitat are swamps and sago palm stocks . It also inhabits dry forests. Fan pigeons are one of the predominantly ground-dwelling species. A characteristic feature of fan pigeons is the slow gait that appears majestic to people. Despite its size, the pigeon is able to fly and rears up when it feels threatened or alarmed. They live mostly in pairs or in small groups. The diet consists of seeds, fruits and insects. The nest is basically built in trees. It consists of twigs and leaves and is more stable than that characteristic of pigeons. The clutch only includes a single egg. The incubation period is 28 days.

The size of the herd is not known, but the IUCN considers the pigeon to be “endangered” because the herds are likely to be in decline due to heavy hunting.
