The real porcupines ( Hystrix ) are a genus from the family of porcupines (Hystricidae) with eight species in Africa , Southwest Asia and southern Europe .

The porcupines have the longest spines of any mammal . The spines are transformed hair. A wide variety of hairs can be found in the dress of the porcupines: soft wool hair, stiffer hair, flat bristles, thick, very elastic, long bristles and rigid, long round skewers. Individual skewers can be up to 40 cm long and 7 mm in diameter.
