The Bochum Stadtbahn is a rail transport system belonging to the Rhein-Ruhr Stadtbahn for the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Bochum and the neighboring cities of Herne , Witten , Hattingen and Gelsenkirchen . It is a mixed system of a light rail and several tram lines , which only have a few sections of the route without crossing. The Bochum Stadtbahn, like the rest of the local public transport in Bochum, is operated by Bochum-Gelsenkirchener Straßenbahnen AG (Bogestra).

business

Only the normal-gauge line U35 belongs to the actual Bochum Stadtbahn in the narrower sense . In addition, Bochum also has a "classic" tram with six lines. This tram runs on meter-gauge rails and is underground in Bochum and Gelsenkirchen city center. It uses the tunnels and stations that were previously built for the planned light rail operation, but which all have platforms suitable for low-floor vehicles.

The six-track Stadtbahn station Bochum Hauptbahnhof is the most important crossing point between the six Bochum lines. Among other things, it is possible to change between the U 35 and two trams at the same platform. For this purpose, the meter gauge rails are graveled . The occupancy of the platforms on the lower level is arranged in such a way that there is a direct transition from the tram going south to the underground going north or vice versa. On the upper level there are two tracks with side platforms that were built for the third route. Otherwise, however, the tram and light rail use different stations. The standard-gauge U35 and the meter-gauge lines are thus linked at the main train station, but also run on different tracks here.

Lines 302, 306 and 308 run every 10 minutes. Deviating from this, the 310 and 318 only run every 20 minutes. The U35 runs every 5 minutes on weekdays (only from Hustadt to Riemke Markt ; Riemke Markt to Schloss Strünkede every 10 minutes), and every 10 minutes during holidays and Saturdays. Line 306 also runs every 5 minutes in the morning, but only between Bochum Hbf and Hordeler Straße. In the off- peak hours , on the other hand, almost all lines only run every 30 minutes, with the U35 running every 15 minutes until the end of operations. The tram stops shortly after midnight and the light rail after 1 a.m. On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays at night, in addition to the night bus lines, the U35, 306 and 318 run every hour in night traffic .

Lines and stations

The Bochum light rail system is star-shaped with the main train station as the center and comprises three underground trunk lines in the center as well as seven outer branches, each of which is used by one or two lines. The trunk lines are a north-south connection, an east-west connection and a diagonal connection that runs from south-west to north-east. The lines follow the major arterial roads. As a result, the lines are largely straightforward. Only Königsallee and, as an extension of it, Kemnader Straße are rail-free and not tunneled under. Instead of a train connection, the bus lines SB 37 (to Kosterstraße), CE 31 and 353 (to Berneckerstraße) operate here .

The routes

Route I

Construction of the Schauspielhaus underground station
NF6D on line 318 in Dahlhausen

These are the oldest tunnel sections of the Bochum Stadtbahn. The light rail, for which the tunnel was originally built, was to run from Hattingen via Bochum-Linden, -Weitmar, -Interstadt, -Gerthe to Castrop-Rauxel. For this purpose, the north branch of the old lines 8 and 18 was moved from Herne and Recklinghausen to Gerthe. The tunnel section comprises four train stations and extends from the ramp at Bergmannsheil to the ramp at Ruhrstadion . The route is served almost entirely according to the original planning by line 308, but ends in Bochum's urban area in the Gerthe district shortly before reaching the city limits.

The route is meter-gauge, but especially in the northeastern branch has been partially expanded to include a light rail system. There and also on the tunnel route, the stops are largely barrier-free . In the southwestern branch the lines run almost exclusively as pure trams and there are only a few barrier-free stations. A few years ago, the route was partly equipped with traffic light priority circuits, as well as stop lights that block the traffic behind the approaching tram for individual traffic. There are five stops in Hattingen. The last two, Bahnhofstrasse and Hattingen Mitte , are used as tram stations. From the Hattinger Ruhrbrücke to the terminus, this line has its own track structure.

In addition, line 318 runs on the route, which, coming from Dahlhausen Bahnhof, reinforces the 308 from Linden Mitte to the main station. In the off-peak hours, the 318 is extended to Gerthe in order to be able to maintain a 15-minute cycle there. In the morning rush hour, the 318 is also extended and ends in Hiltrop at the Nordbad stop .

A special feature can be found during the stadium traffic. Some trains are then driven in double traction, but only in the Bergmannsheil – Rottmannstraße section. The regular trains and the other trains used for reinforcement run as usual with individual wagons.

Route II

The expansion of this north-south connection corresponds most closely to the original plans, as the only line running there, the U35 CampusLinie, is a light rail according to the stricter definition. This means normal-gauge operation, elevated platforms, a reduced number of stopping stations and independent guidance that is shielded from individual traffic. The U35 runs from Herne to Bochum-Querenburg and runs a large part underground. It only runs above ground between the Wasserstraße stop and the Hustadt terminus , but lies in the middle of Universitätsstraße on an independent track. Of the 21 stations, six are above ground and fifteen underground, including all six Hern train stations. In total, there are only four intersections with private transport, at which the tram is given priority through traffic lights.

The originally planned expansion status could not be achieved because the cities of Recklinghausen and Witten have withdrawn from the joint plans and funding. Originally the line should have connected both cities. It ends early in both directions in Herne, Schloss Strünkede or Bochum-Querenburg, Hustadt.

With the exception of the Berninghausstrasse stop in Herne, which does not have a lift, all stations are barrier-free. In practice, however, their use for people with reduced mobility proves to be somewhat more difficult, as the stations are repeatedly affected by vandalism : Barrier-free access is only guaranteed by using elevators except for two above-ground stations ( Wasserstraße and Brenscheder Straße ) also fail again and again due to willful damage.

With around 84,000 passengers (as of 2011), the U35 is the most frequently used line on the Bochum Stadtbahn. In order to cope with this demand, it usually drives in double traction at its technical limit in the morning at rush hour, even every 3 minutes. The U35 closes later than other lines of Bochum's rail traffic. The last regular trains leave the terminal stops shortly after 1:00 a.m. Before Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, the time between the end of operations and the start of operations is covered by night express trips every hour. A transfer relationship with the night express buses that also operate is ensured by the timetable.

Route III

An NF6D on line 302
An M6 on line 310

It was planned to run this route from Laer via Stadtmitte, Höntrop, Wattenscheid-Mitte, Gelsenkirchen-Ückendorf, -Mitte, -Erle to Herten. The route of the trams that previously operated there would have been changed for this tram as well. The planned expansion has meanwhile been put on record, although two planned tunnel sections in the inner cities of Gelsenkirchen (since 1984 to the music theater) and Bochum have been completed for this purpose. In Bochum, this tunnel, which includes four train stations, is now used by lines 302, 305 and 310. The 302 runs with a journey time of 80 minutes between the Bochum-Langendreer train station (during the day on weekdays every 2nd train only from Laer Mitte) to Gelsenkirchen- Buer Rathaus . It drives through the elongated city of Gelsenkirchen in a north-south direction and thus forms the backbone of Gelsenkirchen's local transport . In 1994, the underground route of line 301, which ran further east, was put into operation; the tunnel ends immediately south of the Rhine-Herne Canal at the zoo .

Line 310 comes from Witten, where it serves 15 stops and also crosses the city center of Witten. From Laer Mitte it reinforces the 302, but then continues after Bochum city center to Höntrop Church.

In Langendreer, Laer and on the route of the 310 to Höntrop there are several well-developed sections. A barrier-free access is provided, as on the network in 2020 driving Niederflurwagen. In Bochum, the 302 is only barrier-free between the stops Dannenbaumstraße and Jacob-Mayer-Straße / Jahrhunderthalle and in Wattenscheid Mitte on August-Bebel-Platz and on Freiheitstraße . In Gelsenkirchen, where the route runs independently of individual traffic on the median of a main road, the stops are usually equipped accordingly. The route of the 302 was built in Gelsenkirchen for the soccer world championship 1974 with an independent track structure and expanded again for the double traction operation for the world championship 2006. Nevertheless, the planned U21 route did not follow this route, but further east; some of the stations planned for the U21s are currently served by line 301. As a result, line 302 has only two tunnel stations in Gelsenkirchen.

The new underground light rail line under the city center has been in operation in Bochum since January 29, 2006. So this is now rail-free. Lines 302 and 310 have been running underground between the stops Freilrafendamm and Jacob-Mayer-Straße / Jahrhunderthalle since then .

Line 301, which runs exclusively in Gelsenkirchen, stops at seven tram stations in the tunnel and at one above-ground station (ZOOM Erlebniswelt) . It continues towards Buer Rathaus and ends at Essener Strasse in the Horst district southwest of Buer . The Buerer Str. Stop previously served there provides a connection to the U11 to Essen in a different gauge (between Buerer Str. And Schloss Horst, it uses a three-rail track with this ) and at the music theater, line 107 of the Essen tram from Gelsenkirchen main station branches off above ground .

Route IV

This is the route from Bochum city center to Wanne-Eickel. It is served by tram line 306. In the original planning of the Rhein-Ruhr Stadtbahn, it was intended as a branch from route II (U35), but was initially abandoned over the decades. In the period that followed, the above-ground tram route to Wanne-Eickel was considered a candidate for closure for a long time and was run “for wear and tear”. Only when the construction work on the inner city section of route III was within reach and a closure of the Wanne-Eickeler route was no longer politically desired, the planning for an integration of this route into the light rail network was resumed and finally with a connection to route I am Central station realized. This was done not least because the inner city area of Bochum, in particular Bongardstrasse and Massenbergstrasse, should be free of rails. A connection to the existing tunnel sections or those in the planning and construction at the time was not possible without further ado: The 306 meets the tunnel of lines 302/310 practically at right angles and the U35 is operated on a different gauge (standard gauge) and continuously with elevated platforms. Therefore, an underground bridge was built in the Bochum Rathaus (south) station, over which line 306, crossing the tracks of the 302/310, reaches Bochum's main train station. Line 306 uses an already planned and structurally prepared operating tunnel from the line 308/318 in the direction of the town hall, which among other things serves to connect the lines and to transfer cars from these lines to the Engelsburg tram depot . Compared to the planning, this tunnel was extended as a pure operating tunnel, supplemented by a ramp next to the town hall and a new above-ground Bochum town hall station . Extensive modernization measures were also necessary in the further course of the 306 above ground. Among other things, a greater distance between the tracks so that the longer low-floor wagons can also meet without any problems. All stops were made barrier-free. The construction work in the north of Bochum and in Wanne-Eickel was completed in August 2009. Since then, it has also been possible to use the new low-floor trams on this route. The average speed of the line has increased from 14 km / h to 19 km / h. This should make the connection between Bochum and Wanne-Eickel more attractive.

line Line course Cycle (HVZ)

Individual journeys in professional and stadium traffic will be extended to the VonoviaRuhrstadion stop .

Structural features

Particularly noteworthy among the light rail stations are those on the third route. Bochum Hauptbahnhof presents itself as a six-track tower station on two levels. The four lower tracks on level -3 run in two station tubes with central platforms , with the standard-gauge tracks of the U35 on the inside and the meter-gauge tracks of the 302/310 on the outside. Above on level −2 are the two side platforms for the tracks of lines 306, 308 and 318, which are arranged at right angles to the other tracks.

The Bochum Rathaus station , located in the center of Bochum's city center, was designed as a complex arrangement of three individual systems, which are arranged in a right-angled triangle.

Lohring on the day the tunnel was opened

Lohring station (lines 302 and 310) has a shape reminiscent of an aircraft hangar . He also received the Renault Traffic Award 2006 . The perforated aluminum plates of the cladding have sound-absorbing properties and come from the automotive industry. In addition, there is the illuminated floor, luminous lines on the ceiling, a striking yellow cross on a red background on the front and a sound installation that works with ambient noise; nevertheless, individual tones cannot be concluded here.

The Bochumer Verein / Jahrhunderthalle station (lines 302 and 310) is characterized by the steel look and its light installation. The blue illuminated walls appear yellow before trains arrive, then red and white after they stop. There is a heavy iron plate over one of the station entrances, about the weight of an Airbus.

This is to remind of the direct neighbor, the cast steel plant of the Bochumer Verein , which among other things also wheel tires u. a. for the ICE of Deutsche Bahn. A large-format picture on the western staircase is reminiscent of the old bell foundry hall of the Bochum Association.

Weak points

A picture from the past: A car had to drive onto the sidewalk in Linden to avoid the oncoming tram. The section has since been rebuilt.

There are several structural defects in the Bochum network, including the 20-minute intervals on line 318. There are some single-track sections, for example between the stops Zentrum Augusta Linden and Dahlhausen S (line 318) and Gerthe Mitte and Schürbankstraße (lines 308/318). The narrow point between the center of Augusta Linden and Linden Mitte was a particularly critical point due to the single track at the roadside. It has since been removed and reopened in September 2008 after a year of construction. In the meantime, at least a 15-minute cycle is possible, which has been used on Saturdays since January 2009.

There are also a number of bottlenecks on line 310. The route between Im Ümminger Feld and Crengeldanz is completely single- track with the exception of an alternative point at Am Honnengraben . Another longer section between Bahnhofstrasse and the final stop at Heven Dorf also has only one track, with a diversion at Hans-Böckler-Strasse and Heven Hellweg . However, these are only suitable for the 20 m long high-floor type M6 railcars . Since January 2009, every 15 minutes on Saturdays in order to be able to offer a steady rhythm on the common section of the route with the 302. On weekdays, however, it remains at a 20-minute rhythm, which is why there is the curious situation that the schedule density on line 310 is then lower than on Saturdays.

In Gelsenkirchen, the use of NF6D wagons is not permitted on line 301 in the section between Buer Süd Bahnhof and the terminus at Essener Strasse , as these are the same level rails at the Emschertalbahn level crossing due to the risk of derailment (the two middle axles are designed as single-wheel single bogies ) must not happen. Nothing will change in this situation in the foreseeable future. The Variobahns have now taken over operations on the route. These railcars have fixed running gears and do not pose a risk at the level crossing.

Views

To replace the old M6 wagons, BOGESTRA has ordered 45 new wagons, 30 of which have already been delivered from the first series. The remaining 15 railcars will follow in 2013–2015. These new railcars of the Variobahn type were initially used in Gelsenkirchen on the 301 line, but are now also used for the entire day on the 306 line. There are also 6 standard-gauge Tango type trams from the same manufacturer to increase the vehicle reserve for the U35, because the Vehicle inventory is currently too small. If all courses are run in double traction, 24 B-wagons are required, on weekdays between 7:00 and 8:00 am even 28, but the Bogestra only has 25 vehicles in total, so there were frequent bottlenecks in the past. This is a problem, especially at peak times, as the line connects the Ruhr University with Bochum's main train station and is therefore very busy. With the new vehicles, these problems should now be a thing of the past. The start of delivery for the Tango was August 31, 2007, for the Variobahn on March 7, 2008. The Tangos have now all been delivered and are being used as scheduled in double traction.

The bottlenecks on line 306 have already been removed. The measures, which cost around 30 million euros, were completed on August 15, 2009 with a ceremonial opening of the converted line. In the long term, an extension of line 306 over the route of line 308/318 to the Rottmannstraße stop is planned, from where the Harpen district and the Ruhr-Park shopping center are to be reconnected with a new line.

Current terminus at Heven Dorf
An M6 on line 310 in Bahnhofstrasse in Witten

No more detailed information is currently known about a reconstruction of the Witten route to accelerate line 310. However, there are plans to extend the branch to the Heveney leisure pool or even back to the Herbede district . According to the evaluation of the country according to IGVP, this is unlikely to be the case in the medium term. In 2007 a discontinuation of the section between Witten, Bahnhofstrasse or Heven Hellweg and Heven Dorf was discussed. The route, which is completely single-track with the exception of two alternative points, is in need of renovation. As part of a benefit analysis, it should be checked whether a refurbishment or a switch to bus operation would be more suitable. Line 310 could have ended at the planned new ZOB Witten Hauptbahnhof . On December 6, 2007, the Witten City Council decided unanimously to maintain the line to Heven-Dorf. However, this means a review of bus lines 320 and 339.

In the future, line 310 is to be [obsolete] via the Langendreer district . After completion of the construction project, new Variobahn trams should no longer turn from Wittener Straße into Universitätsstraße , but drive straight ahead in the direction of Langendreer Markt , where the route will continue to the right in the direction of Witten, to rejoin the existing route at Crengeldanz . Construction began on the first phase of construction on September 21, 2012. The first section was opened on October 7, 2017. Line 302 was extended from Laer to Langendreer, so that it turns left at the market in order to reach the new terminus at Langendreer S-Bahn station from there. A direct connection from Witten to Langendreer S-Bahn station is expected to come with the introduction of the network in 2020 as line 309.

In the 2000s, an extension of the U35 in both directions was publicly considered. The once planned extension via Hustadt to Witten will in all probability no longer be realized. As an advance payment , however, there is a bridge that swings over the carriageway to the right behind the Hustadt terminus. This should be included in the short extension of the route to connect the technology park and the Bochum University of Applied Sciences . A later extension of the route to Witten would therefore be less likely, if not impossible. At the other end there were considerations of extending the U35 to Recklinghausen Hauptbahnhof as a replacement for a bus line. This idea is not new, as it was already mentioned in the plans for the construction of the city railroad in the 1970s. At that time there was no construction because the city of Recklinghausen withdrew from the light rail company. Later two courses were discussed, optionally with the integration of the DB stop Recklinghausen Süd. The previous line of the U35, the above-ground tram line (30) 5, ran to Recklinghausen Hbf. However, the northern branch of the Vestische trams was shut down in 1982, seven years before the U35 opened. Line 5 has not stopped at the Recklinghausen-Süd DB station since 1964 . However, there were no concrete plans for the northern extension. The southern extension by two stops to the Bochum University of Applied Sciences was assessed as having an insufficient cost-benefit coefficient within the framework of the IGVP and classified as a level 2 project within the framework of the rail requirements plan. Realization was therefore by no means planned before 2015. An extension to Langendreer is being discussed in the 2010s.
