The MGT6D ( DUEWAG low-floor car ) is a type of tram- low-floor articulated multiple unit with a low-floor share of around 63 to 70 percent.

technology

This type was developed for Kassel from 1988 . It was the first series vehicle to have single-wheel single-wheel chassis (EEF) based on the Frederich system. The vehicle consists of a middle part with two EEF drives and two end parts attached to it, each with a two-axle drive bogie . The vehicles in Bonn and Düsseldorf have single-axle racks instead of the EEF drives, while the vehicles in Leipzig have two-axle small wheel bogies.

They are available as one or two-way vehicles and in various widths and lengths.

The Kassel vehicles have a classic direct current drive with chopper control , all other vehicles have a three-phase drive. Due to the larger space requirements of the DC motors, the Kassel wagons have a higher floor above the motor bogies in contrast to the variants in other cities. In order to ensure that all doors are on the same level despite the end entrances, the wagons in Kassel were also given asymmetrical ends.

commitment

After delivery to Kassel in 1990, the Bogestra also ordered a meter-gauge version with only 2.3 m car body width. Already during the construction phase of the Bochum wagons, two vehicles were delivered to HAVAG in Halle an der Saale, which then procured further modified vehicles.

In addition to these three companies, the vehicle was also sent to Brandenburg an der Havel , Mülheim an der Ruhr and Oberhausen , to Erfurt (there also as a one-way vehicle ), as well as - with a modified front section ( adapted to the type M / N light rail vehicle) and individual doors at the vehicle ends - Delivered to Heidelberg (all meter gauge ) and Rostock ( standard gauge ) with a different door arrangement and therefore a step-free passenger compartment.

Also, Bonn , Dusseldorf and Leipzig employ a modified for this type car.

The MGT6D are normally used individually. On the Erfurt tram , the Bogestra (only at major events) and in Düsseldorf and originally in Oberhausen, they are also used in double traction with a capacity of almost 350 passengers; In Halle, double units drove on line 2 between 1999 and 2003.

Rhine-Neckar

For Mannheim / Ludwigshafen and Heidelberg the procurement of the MGT6D and one for approx. 40 was from 1993/1994 Meter-longer variant planned as the first common vehicle type for all three cities and the Rhein-Haardtbahn . Advertisements have already been issued showing the drawing of an MGT6D in the green Mannheim color scheme that was current at the time. Ultimately, only Heidelberg procured these vehicles, but with a modified front, similar to the M light rail vehicle . Due to problems with the axle load of the extended vehicle, the procurement of this vehicle type was not carried out in Mannheim and Ludwigshafen. Instead, 69 multi-articulated vehicles of the 6MGT and 8MGT types were purchased. Only the front section of the MGT6D was adopted for these vehicles.

successor

With its structure of the car body , the eight-axle version of the Bombardier Flexity Classic can be regarded as the successor to the MGT6D. Kassel was also the first to order this type.

Problems

The NF6D wagons used by Bogestra from 1992 were actually only fully available in summer 2006, but soon showed new weak points due to cracks in the car bodies at window and door corners and in summer 2014 due to the breakage of an axle bridge. The discovery of another chassis with cracks in the cast axle brackets of the single wheel chassis in January 2015 led to the decision of the technical supervisory authority to restrict this type of car to a maximum speed of 30 km / h to continue to operate. The cast single wheel bogies have been gradually replaced by forged bogies since 2015, as they were also used in later construction lots. After replacing the axle brackets, the maximum speed remains at 50 km / h limited. From 2016, the NF6D will be replaced early with new acquisitions. Originally, it was planned to operate for 35 years instead of the 23 years now reached.
