The Stadtwerke Bonn GmbH (SWB) is a municipal mass transit , encryption and waste management companies in Bonn and the parent holding company of the Bonn Stadtwerke -Konzerns. The sole shareholder is the federal city of Bonn. Together with its companies, the group takes on important services of general interest for Bonn and the region in the fields of energy supply , drinking water supply , local transport and waste disposal .

The consolidated annual turnover of the SWB Group in 2012 was around 500 million euros. As the fourth largest company in the federal city, Stadtwerke Bonn employs around 2,300 people. With around 80 trainees, they are also one of the largest training companies in Bonn.

history

The SWB company history begins with the commissioning of 727 gas lanterns. The gasworks in Karlstrasse went online on April 1, 1879 under municipal management and provided city gas for public and domestic lighting in Bonn.

On February 11, 1899, the Bonn power station went into operation. The new supply company was also the first to be directly managed by the city as a municipal company.

Local public transport in Bonn began on April 19, 1891: A so-called “Päädsbahn” (dialect for horse-drawn tram ) carried Bonn passengers from that day; the tram was pulled over the tracks by horses. On May 22nd, 1898, the steam-powered tram started for the first time in the spa town of Bad Godesberg, south of Bonn . From May 1893 the steam locomotive continued to drive to Mehlem . The Vorgebirgsbahn , which was soon popularly known as "Fiery Elias", ran on January 8, 1898 from Bonn to Barbarossaplatz in Cologne . The first electric tram set out on May 21, 1902, on its maiden voyage over the new Rhine bridge to Beuel on the right bank of the Rhine. On November 1, 1905, horse and steam trains also changed hands and went into municipal hands for 3.1 million gold marks. All horse-drawn tram routes were converted to electricity by 1909. The steam train was also electrified and continued to be operated jointly by the city of Bonn and the mayor's office of Godesberg under the name of the Bonn - Godesberg - Mehlem tram (BGM).

The small electric train Bonn – Siegburg (the " Siegburger ") started on September 6, 1911. On October 18, the Bonn – Oberdollendorf (“ Siebengebirgsbahn ”) line followed, which was extended as planned to Königswinter on March 18, 1913 and to Honnef on September 26, 1925 . The city of Bonn, the district of Bonn and the Siegkreis signed a partnership agreement and founded the electric rail company for the districts of Bonn-Stadt, Bonn-Land and the Siegkreis . After the municipal reorganization of the Bonn area in 1969 and the associated restructuring of Stadtwerke Bonn on January 1, 1970, the railway company was called Elektro Bahnen of the city of Bonn and the Rhein-Sieg district . At the beginning of 2004, SWB Bus und Bahn took over the management of SSB.

On April 1, 1900, the private waterworks on the Gronau , which went into operation in 1875, became the property of the city. This meant that Bonn's energy and water supply were in the hands of the city. The city's gas , electricity and waterworks were merged in August 1919 to form the independent municipal management department .

The electricity works, the gas works, the water works, the city trams, the bus company (BVG) and the commercial shipyard were merged on June 21, 1940 with their subsidiary companies to form a single company called Stadtwerke Bonn (SWB).

On June 28, 1988, the groundbreaking ceremony for the new waste incineration plant (MVA) on Immenburgstrasse took place. It was officially inaugurated on May 5, 1992 and began regular operations on August 3, 1992.

In 1999, Stadtwerke Bonn changed from being a municipal company to a group with independent corporations. The SWB GmbH is the parent holding company of various subsidiaries. After the conversion, a serious case of corruption in the company became known: The long-standing managing director of the company, Reiner Schreiber , was under urgent suspicion of corruption in the particularly serious case, acceptance of benefits and tax evasion because of a controversial contract award for the modernization of the two Bonn heating power plants . He was arrested on April 8, 2002 during a council meeting; he was then four weeks detention . Because of his severe cancer, which he finally succumbed to in October 2004, the public prosecutor's office decided not to continue the case against him.

Since then, Stadtwerke Bonn has set up an anti-corruption program that provides for continuous further development and evaluation. Management and employees committed themselves to a value-oriented action. In 2005, the corporate and value culture was anchored in the mission statement. A code of conduct is currently being drawn up, in which binding guidelines for everyday business practice are laid down.

With the conversion of the combined heat and power plant north into a modern combined cycle power plant (2010 to 2013), Stadtwerke Bonn significantly expanded its own generation of electricity. HKW Nord also supplies Bonn's district heating network.
