The Recklinghausen Süd train station is a train station in the south of Recklinghausen in the Grullbad district . It is located on the Wanne-Eickel-Hamburg railway line and, in addition to the main train station, is the other Recklinghausen station. It belongs to station category  5.

Station complex

The Recklinghausen Südbahnhof is a through station that has a central and a side platform (formerly the main platform), which are connected by a pedestrian tunnel. He owns three platform tracks. Track 1 and 2 for the RE line RE 42 Niers-Haard-Express ( Mönchengladbach - Münster ) and track 4 for the S-Bahn line S 2 connection with Dortmund . There is a signal box next to the platforms. To the north of the platforms are the tracks of the freight yard . This has been significantly reduced compared to the original system and its drainage mountain has been removed. In 2012, Deutsche Bahn designated a "natural" meadow on an area of around 260 m² on track 1, which is deliberately only to be mowed annually. A corresponding sign from DB Netze in the DB advertisement design indicates this fact with the words "A contribution to nature - the flower meadow" and provides background information.

history

With the construction of the Hamburg-Venloer Bahn in 1870, the Cologne-Mindener Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft wanted to make the districts of South and Hochlarmark accessible by rail. The workers at the Recklinghausen colliery should also be able to get to their jobs more quickly. It was decided to build a station building with a house and side platform. When the barriers were closed, pedestrians could use a crossing bridge on the northern side of the sidewalk.

To the north and east of the passenger station there were extensive freight and shunting tracks for the surrounding mines and other industrial facilities, which in 1956 extended between Richardstrasse in the west and Hellbachstrasse in the east. These systems have been gradually dismantled over the decades, although some of these tracks are still available today and are used for freight traffic.

The station was modernized in the 1970s. The connecting tracks to the now closed colliery were dismantled, the station building and the crossing bridge were demolished and the platforms were rebuilt. The main platform became a side platform and the second side platform became a central platform. This additional track was built to enable direct journeys to Herne train station . In addition, a modern signal box was built east of the platforms . As part of the extension of the S 2 S-Bahn line to the main station , the station was modernized for the second time between 1997 and 1998. The two platforms were equipped with ramps and the platform on platform 3 was raised to S-Bahn level. As a result, the central platform has two different heights, as the platforms on tracks 1 and 2 remained at the same height. With the completion of the modernization, the Recklinghausen Süd station was downgraded to a local transport system stop, as only S and regional trains stop there. Since 24 May 1998 reversed the first time there is a train that has since Monday to Friday every hour from about 6 to 20:00 Recklinghausen with Dortmund combines.
