The Bochum – Gelsenkirchen railway line refers to the Glückauf-Bahn passenger train connection from Bochum Hauptbahnhof to Gelsenkirchen Hauptbahnhof (regional train line RB 46), and to the freight train connections from Bochum Gbf at the former Bochum Süd station and Bochum President to Gelsenkirchen-Schalke Nord.

The railway line was built between 1867 and 1876 in sections by the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn . The connecting curve to Bochum's main train station was not put into operation until 1979.

Nokia and Glückauf trains

Until 1978, DB passenger trains ran from Bochum-Langendreer via Bochum Nord and Bochum- Riemke to Wanne-Eickel. After the construction of a new connecting curve from Bochum main station to the line towards Riemke in 1979, the passenger train connection ran from Bochum main station to Herne.

The Herne-Rottbruch stop on this section was a special case because it was located in the middle of a bridge over the federal motorway 43 .

From 1990 the trains ran from Bochum Hbf via Wanne-Eickel to Gelsenkirchen Hauptbahnhof. The direct connection to Herne was therefore left to the U35 urban railway , which opened in 1989 .

In the early 1990s, the electronics manufacturer Nokia, based on the route, sponsored the modernization of the vehicle fleet. This initially consisted of three vehicles from the 515 series , then diesel multiple units from the 628 series . The sponsorship extended to the previous stop in Bochum Graetz , which was renamed Bochum NOKIA , and to the rail connection itself, which was henceforth marketed as "Nokia Bahn". After Nokia withdrew from Bochum at the end of 2008, the line was named "Glückauf-Bahn" and the stop has been called Bochum-Riemke since the 2009/10 timetable change .

Since 2005 Abellio Rail NRW has been operating the RB 46 line in the Emscher-Ruhrtal network with three CORADIA LINT 41 / H vehicles , as well as with the Stadler FLIRT EMU 2 on weekends and holidays .

Emschertal Railway

The section (Wanne-Eickel) –Gelsenkirchen-Zoo– (Dorsten) is used for passenger transport by the regional train line RB 43 “Emschertal-Bahn”. Until 1988, the trains (at that time battery-powered multiple units of the 515 series ) ran from the northernmost track of the Wanne-Eickel main station via a connecting curve directly to the Wanne-Unser Fritz stop. Today the connecting curve has been dismantled and the breakpoint closed. Since the shutdown, passenger trains have been running from the southernmost platform in Wanne-Eickel over the longer, southern connecting curve without stopping to Gelsenkirchen Zoo.

Freight transport

In freight traffic, the 2153 railroad starts from the Bochum-Langendreer marshalling yard . Among bypass the passenger stations of pan-Eickel and Herne is Recklinghausen directly or Gelsenkirchen-Bismarck achieved.

The branch line Bochum-Riemke-Wanne-Eickel via Wanne-Röhlinghausen was operated between 1886 and 1960 in passenger and freight traffic. The mileage starts at the former Bochum President train station. In addition to passenger traffic from Bochum-Langendreer to Wanne-Eickel, the connections to the Hanover mine (until 1973) and the Mannesmann steelworks in Wanne-Eickel (until its closure in 1980) ensured brisk freight traffic. The route led past the Hanover colliery to the east and can be recognized by the colliery's Malakow tower, which is still preserved today. West of the colliery and the neighboring Königsgrube colliery was the z. The railway line Gelsenkirchen-Wattenscheid - Wanne-Eickel (route 2232, see below) is sometimes less than 100 m away. In Wanne-Eickel, the Bochum-Riemke-Wanne-Eickel railway on today's Görresstraße initially crossed the south branch of the main railway Gelsenkirchen Hbf-Wanne-Eickel Hbf (exactly below the point where the parallel route 2232 also threaded into the south branch), then take the Bickern junction to then thread onto the north branch of the Gelsenkirchen Hbf – Wanne-Eickel Hbf line at Plutostraße. Wanne-Eickel Hbf was reached by this railway line from the west, unlike the "Glückaufbahn" that is operated today, which reaches Wanne-Eickel Hbf from the east.

Railway line Gelsenkirchen - Gelsenkirchen-Wattenscheid - Wanne-Eickel

This only 10 km long and single-track route from Gelsenkirchen Hbf via Gelsenkirchen-Wattenscheid station, located south of the city limits on the Essen-Kray Nord-Bochum Langendreer railway line and again north to Wanne-Eickel, was exclusive except for a brief interlude around 1880 operated in freight transport. However, in 1949 it was temporarily used for pilgrimages to the Catholic Day in Bochum because the connection via Wanne - Riemke - Bochum was overloaded. The destination at that time was the Katholikentagbahnhof . Originally built as a colliery railway ( Carolinenglücker Bahn , see below), the section to Gelsenkirchen-Wattenscheid was dismantled in the 1960s. The section to the cast steelworks (today Science Park ) was used until 1986. Beyond the factory premises, the route currently used as a cycle path between Rheinelbehalde and today's Ückendorf comprehensive school - here the Kray-Wanner railway passed under the above train station. To the east of this, the connection along the Hannover and Königsgrube collieries was even in operation in an electrified manner until 1990.

Carolinenglücker Bahn

From the Gelsenkirchen-Wattenscheid train station, a connecting railway runs east to the nearby Carolinenglück colliery . Together with the neighboring collieries of Hanover , Holland and Rheinelbe , the Carolinenglück colliery built a connecting line to Gelsenkirchen CME (today Gelsenkirchen main station ) in the 1850s . In 1867 the Rheinische Bahn Osterath – Dortmund Süd was connected to them. Parts of the railway at the Carolinenglück colliery formed the basis of the ore railway at the beginning of the 20th century .
