Bermuda3eck

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bermuda3eck in downtown Bochum is the name of an area with a high density of gastronomic establishments . It is located between the Südring and Konrad-Adenauer-Platz. Favored by the short distances to the Bochum theater , the Union cinema and the main train station , such facilities began to spread in the 1980s.

Culture and gastronomy

There are over 80 restaurants in Bochum's Bermuda3eck. The extension of the area is around two square kilometers. Of the approximately 8,000 seats in restaurants and other pubs, more than half are outside catering, which has been typical for Bermuda3eck since the seating of squares and sidewalks was introduced in Bochum at the beginning of the 1970s. The "privatization" of public space through beer gardens that goes hand in hand with this development is controversial, but generally accepted by the population.

The gastronomy has over three million guests a year. In summer there are sometimes 30,000 guests a day on sunny weekends and around 300,000 guests at large events such as Bochum Total . The Bermuda3eck offers around 1,600 jobs.

Real estate prices and lease prices rose in the 2010s, so that the classic retail trade disappears and the vacant space is taken over by restaurants. As a result, the food and drink prices of the catering establishments are quite high in a regional comparison.

The regular major events in Bermuda3eck include:

  • the four-day Bochum Total annually at the beginning of July, a street music festival that is outstanding on a European scale.
  • the May evening festival , the starting point for a traditional parade for several hundred years
  • the Sparkassen-Giro Bochum , a cycling race with the Südring (start and finish) and Viktoriastraße sections directly bordering the Bermuda3eck

Thanks to its proximity to the main train station, the Bochum theater , the “Riff” disco, the Rotunda cultural center and several cinemas, the district is the city's cultural center and a popular meeting place for people from all over the Ruhr area.

History and change

Until the end of the 1970s, the area around Engelbertbrunnen was not characterized by anything unusual. Only the cinemas Intimes (today: Casablanca ), Union and in the immediate vicinity the Capitol (later Bofimax , since 2017 Capitol again ) as well as the English themed Victory Pub and a pub restaurant next to the cinema, now a Turkish restaurant , made it attractive at the time in the evening in Bochum.

Only the rapidly increasing density of pubs at the end of the 1980s led to the development of a real “nightlife district”. In particular, the drivability of the Brüderstraße made the district a kind of show stage for converted cars (at that time especially because of the local Opel factory Opel Mantas ). The term Bermuda Triangle first appeared in the former MARABO magazine . The reporter Werner Schmitz wrote an article about Leonardo Bauer (the "father" of the Bermuda3eck) with the title Captain in the Bermuda Triangle and quoted him.

Since the 1980s, the Logos Group has been one of the main developers of the Bermuda3eck with several different types of restaurants. In contrast to conventional system catering, not many locations with one focus but one with many concepts were developed. In the mid-1990s, Bauer and the Logos Group covered almost the entire market in Bermuda3eck with a wide range of different gastronomy concepts.

Bauer and the Logos Group were the initiators of ISG Bermuda3eck e. V., one of the first real estate and location communities (Business Improvement District / BID) in North Rhine-Westphalia , whose supervisory board includes Bauer and Hans-Joachim Hauschulz for the Logos Group.

The great attraction to non-urban visitors, who were not familiar with the assignment of the pubs to the different youth cultures and were not used to this in this form, led in the 1990s to an extensive equalization of the restaurants, to an increase in prices and a predominance of the Occasional guests versus regular guests. An alignment of the design is also shown by the equipment with large screens, as they are already known from the US-American gastronomy.

In the course of an extensive renovation of the upper Kortumstrasse in the Bermuda3eck area, almost all of the old trees and the Engelbertbrunnen, which had already been steadily reduced in size, were removed from the end of 2008 to the beginning of 2009. The knight figure of the former fountain was given a new location directly opposite the confluence of the Brüderstraße, while the tree population was replaced by new plantings. The geometric alignment of these trees together with new lighting along the building lines creates large open spaces and thus significantly more seating for the catering industry. At the same time, however, any seating for visitors who do not use the gastronomic offer has been removed.

In 2011 the streetwear store Boom! Store a glass roundabout at the entrance to Adenauerplatz and in 2012 an outdoor skater landscape on the roof there.
