The route operated by the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft from the former Bochum-Süd main station to Mülheim an der Ruhr was put into operation on March 1, 1862. A waiting building with ticket sales was opened on June 1, 1886 in Höntrop . The station building followed on October 1, 1910.
