The Bahnhof Essen West is an S-Bahn -Knotenpunkt in Essen district Frohnhausen .
history
On March 1, 1862, the section of the Witten / Dortmund – Oberhausen / Duisburg railway between Essen and Mülheim an der Ruhr was opened by the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft .
The choice of the location of the train station was justified by the close proximity to hard coal mines and in particular to the Krupp cast steel factory . In the 1880s it went into operation as Altendorf station . Later there was the first renaming in Altendorf-Cronenberg , in 1898 the next in Altendorf Essen-Süd . In 1901, when Altendorf and Frohnhausen became part of the city of Essen, the station was renamed Essen West .
Initially, a former residential building of the Kronenberg workers' colony on the northern side of the former railway line and east of today's train station served as the station building.
In 1912 and 1913, today's station building was built south of the railway line and a few hundred meters west of the old station. At times a train station restaurant was also housed here. After severe war damage to the entire station complex in World War II , the Westbahnhof, which had not yet been covered again, was mockingly called the water station . The station building was changed and repaired. The completely rebuilt station restaurant opened in March 1949.
The two S-Bahn lines S1 and S3 have been serving Essen West station since 1974, and line S9 since 1998. In 2019, the regional express lines RE 14 and RE 49 were added.
Investments
The station has two island platforms with two four tracks. East of the station, the lines from / to Mülheim and from / to Bottrop already separate, so that the Mülheim – Essen trains run on the outer tracks 1 and 4, the Bottrop-Essen trains on the tracks 2 and 3 in between. North of the platforms there are two tracks for long-distance traffic without a platform and some sidings.
Todays situation
The station is in rail transport today from the lines S1, S3 and S9, the train Rhein-Ruhr , as well as the regional express operated -line RE 14, and RE 49th It is located on the Witten / Dortmund – Oberhausen / Duisburg railway (timetable 450.1, 450.3), as well as on the Mülheim-Heißen – Oberhausen-Osterfeld Nord railway (timetable 450.9).
In the operating point directory of Deutsche Bahn , the stop has the abbreviation EENW. The station is listed in station category 4 as a local transport system stop.
An underpass leads from the station building from 1913 to the four tracks and to the north from the station. The platforms were renovated in 2012 and 2013. The restaurant is empty today, there is a kiosk.
