The Muelheim (Ruhr) West train station is one of three rail transport Keep in Mülheim an der Ruhr . It is located northwest of the city center opposite the Friedrich Wilhelms-Hütte and was once Mülheim's most important train station. The station was opened on March 1, 1862 by the Bergisch-Märkische railway company with the name Mülheim (Ruhr) BM . Another BME railway line, the Untere Ruhrtalbahn , served other stations in the Ruhrtal from 1876 to 1968, which could also be reached via this station until 1909. In August 1892 it was renamed Mülheim (Ruhr) . From an operational point of view, it has always been the most important train station in Mülheim until the mid-1950s and thus more important than today's main train station ( Eppinghofen at that time , later Mülheim (Ruhr) city ). The Mülheim (Ruhr) BM train station was not accepted accordingly by the Mülheim population because of the greater distance to the city center. The remote location of the station was due, among other things, to the fact that, during the steam locomotive era, the heavy and long express and express trains in front of the Heißener Berg needed a run-up and / or push support and therefore ran through Eppinghofen . When the long-distance trains to Eppinghofer Bahnhof (today Mülheim (Ruhr) Hauptbahnhof ) were relocated and the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Hütte and its industrial plants were closed, the western Mülheim (Ruhr) station finally lost its importance . On May 26, 1974 the station got its current name Mülheim (Ruhr) West , also in the course of the introduction of the S-Bahn . From then on, the station was served exclusively by the S3 S-Bahn line. The S1 line goes through it without stopping. The old station building was demolished in 1975.

Today's Mülheim (Ruhr) West stop is not very frequented, which is due to its decentralized location and the corresponding accessibility of the station. It was always served by the S3 S-Bahn line. The S1 only stops in Mülheim (Ruhr) West in exceptional cases. B. if the S3 has to pass through the Styrum station without stopping due to construction work , or, as in December 2013, fails completely due to force majeure.
The stop has an exit to the west, which leads to the stop for line 112 . This runs parallel to the railway line to the city center and in the north over the Thyssen Bridge in the direction of Oberhausen . Therefore, the S-Bahn stop is only important for the area around Styrum- Marienplatz and Styrum-Sültenfuß and line 112 is the only branch that connects the Mülheim West stop to an area for potential passengers. The tram line 110 also stopped here until October 3, 2015, and continued along the railway line via Styrum station to Friesenstraße . This connection was replaced by bus line 128.
For pedestrians to the train station
The stop is quite difficult to reach on foot: To the southeast, the Haus der Wirtschaft and a residential area are located over 400 meters away . Also in the north there are hardly any areas for which the station would be of interest. There are no buildings up to the Thyssen Bridge (over the railway line). To the north of this, but more than a kilometer away, is the Aquarius Mülheim , a former water tower that now houses a water museum, as well as Styrum Castle . Both are already in the immediate catchment area of the neighboring Mülheim-Styrum system stop . After crossing the Thyssen Bridge , part of Mülheim-Styrum can be reached: Marienplatz , however, is also outside a 400-meter radius around Mülheim (Ruhr) West. This means that the station hardly opens up any destinations within walking distance.
For those changing from bus / tram to the S-Bahn
Mülheim (Ruhr) West is also not interesting as a transfer point , as this is only between the S-Bahn line 3 (Oberhausen - Mülheim / Ruhr - Essen - Hattingen / Ruhr), the tram line 112 (Oberhausen - Mülheim) and the bus line 128 ( MH-Styrum - Mülheim Hbf) comes into question. Line 128 runs parallel to the S-Bahn and already offers transfer options in Styrum and at the main train station, especially since there are more local rail transport lines at both stations than in Mülheim West - S1 (Solingen - Düsseldorf - Duisburg - Mülheim / Ruhr - Essen - Bochum - Dortmund ) in Styrum and at the main station as well as at the main station regional and long-distance trains. The change between tram line 112 to S3 is only interesting for the Styrum- Sültenfuß / Marienplatz- Essen route, as both lines run in the opposite direction to Oberhausen, with line 112 continuing on the Oberhausen public transport route to Oberhausen-Sterkrade . As a result, it is of little relevance to passengers transferring as well as the few passengers who can reach it on foot.
As a result, Mülheim West is a station where the S-Bahn sometimes even passes through.

future
If the area around the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Hütte should be better marketed, this station needs an expansion, then the S-Bahn line S1 could stop there again. Otherwise, Mülheim West will only stop at the S3.
In addition, another stop is planned for the S3 in Oberhausen-Alstaden , which in contrast to Mülheim (Ruhr) West with the Oberhausen districts of Alstaden and Styrum, which together have over 20,000 inhabitants, opens up a significantly higher passenger potential.
More weak system stops
Together with the hourly stops of the S2 in the northern Ruhr area and the Essen-Hügel stop of the S6, Mülheim West is one of the less frequented stations of the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn. With the Essen-Hügel stop , it shares the characteristic that, at least on weekdays, most trains stop there without changing passengers. However, since Essen-Hügel with the Baldeneysee opens up an important leisure destination in contrast to Mülheim-West , Essen-Hügel compensates for this on weekends and on public holidays with the corresponding leisure traffic to the Baldeneysee.
