Cyanea linearifolia (English name: Linearleaf Cyanea ) is an extinct Hawaiian species of the bellflower family (Campanulaceae), which wasendemicto Kauaʻi .

description

Cyanea linearifolia was a branching shrub 1.6 to 2.6 meters tall. The obovate to obovate leaves were 15 to 30 centimeters long. The hanging inflorescence reached a length of one meter. Each inflorescence consisted of six to twelve about 55 millimeters long, strongly curved, light purple single flowers. The fruits were oval berries .

distribution and habitat

The habitat of Cyanea linearifolia was probably humid ʻhiʻa -, koa acacia - or tree fern forests in the Wahiawa Mountains in southern Kauaʻi .

die out

The reasons for the species becoming extinct are largely unknown. Forest destruction by pigs and displacement by invasive plants may have contributed to the extinction of this plant species. Cyanea linearifolia is known only from the type specimen and three additional specimens, which was collected at an unknown date in either the late 19th century or early 20th century and described by Joseph Francis Rock in 1957 .

In 1991 the botanist Ken Wood discovered a species of Cyanea on Kaua'i, which he believed to be the extinct species Cyanea linearifolia . However, his colleague Thomas G. Lammers found out on the basis of comparisons that it is a new species, which he named Cyanea kuhihewa .
