The Mülheim Stadtmitte underground station is an underground station in Mülheim (Ruhr) . It is operated by the Duisburg Stadtbahn and the Mülheim an der Ruhr tram . It lies in the course of the Stadtbahn section of the Schloß Broich-Mülheim Hbf
history
Over the decades, the Mülheim Stadtmitte stop has become the central stop for all tram lines in Mülheim, and since the 1990s also for the NachtExpress lines that meet there. As an alternative to private transport, a network of tram lines separated from road traffic should also be created in Mülheim. With the expansion of the light rail, part of the tram network was also integrated into the light rail traffic. This means that sections of lines 102 and 901 have been run underground since the late 1990s. Line 102, which was previously carried out laboriously via Friedrich-Ebert-Straße and Bahnstraße, has now reached the main station quickly . The former Bahnstraße tunnel ramp was shut down and demolished after the new tunnel section went into operation. Line 901, which previously ended at the Stadtmitte stop, has been extended to the main train station.
Originally, the U18 light rail line was also supposed to stop at the Stadtmitte underground station . For this purpose, the platforms were built with a high-floor section leading into a low-floor section where lines 102 and 901 stop. The elevated platforms were planned long enough for the U18, but were shortened during construction in favor of longer trains on lines 102 and 901, so that the U18 ends at the neighboring Mülheim (Ruhr) Hauptbahnhof .
location
As the name describes, the train station is in the center of Mülheim, directly on the Ruhr. Due to the central location on Friedrich-Ebert-Straße and Leineweberstraße, you can reach many retail shops as well as municipal facilities such as the city administration or the registry office in the south.
Special
Both railway lines have different gauges (Duisburg line 901 standard gauge, line 102 meter gauge), which is why the common route has both track sizes in one rail bed. Like the neighboring Schloß Broich underground station, it has mixed high-floor and low-floor platforms, the high-floor sections of which (for the Essen underground line U18) were built too short and therefore never put into operation.
