The RheinRuhrZentrum (short: RRZ , own spelling: Rhein-Ruhr Zentrum) was one of the first covered shopping centers in Germany when it opened in 1973 . It is located in the east of Mülheim an der Ruhr on the border with Essen and today has around 79,000 square meters of retail space.
history
The 200,000 square meter site was used by the Humboldt colliery of the Mülheimer Bergwerkverein until 1929 . It then served as a coal handling facility.
After initial planning in 1970, the shopping center, which cost around DM 150 million and had 57 stores at the time , opened on March 1, 1973 . The project was developed by the architect Walter Brune , who had previously built several department stores, including for Karstadt and Horten , and who later developed the Kö-Galerie . At that time, Stinnes AG , Karstadt AG , C&A Brenninkmeyer and Otto Warenhausgesellschaft were the owners.
In 1978 the RheinRuhrZentrum acquired 31 additional retail stores after the Otto department store had been rebuilt.
From 1992 to 1993 the RheinRuhrZentrum was considerably expanded and expanded. The old building area was restructured and equipped with glass domes, so that many shopping malls and shops are newly presented. Extensive new buildings with large, light-flooded malls were built in the east, south and west. The outer facade received a new cladding.
In 1998, construction work began to expand the RheinRuhrZentrum to include the south area into an urban entertainment center .
In 2006, the takeover by RheinRuhrZentrum GmbH & Co.KG, a joint company of the Merrill Lynch Group and the ECE Project Management Group, took place.
The RRZ currently has over 200 specialist shops as well as extensive gastronomy and entertainment offers on a sales area of 70,000 m². Adjacent is the former administration building of Stinnes AG , which today houses the headquarters of the Brenntag Group (chemical distribution).
Up to 40,000 visitors come on normal sales days. On "long Saturdays", especially before Christmas, there can be up to 80,000 visitors. The turnover increased from approximately 139 million DM (1973) to about 360 million euros (2002).
YoungFashionMall
The YoungFashionMall is a so-called mall within the mall. This has focused on the fashion of teenagers specialized. There is also a bowling center here (separate area in the basement).
Food lounge
In addition to a number of fast food outlets, there are other restaurants here, such as ice cream parlors, cocktail bars, open restaurants and pubs. On summer nights the numerous restaurants offer their services until midnight. Adjacent is a CinemaxX cinema as well as a casino within the food lounge, which also operates a restaurant. In the upper area there is a children's paradise.
The Festival Garden was renamed the Food Lounge in April 2013 , which is intended to represent a younger and fresher concept.
Transport links
In 2003, the RheinRuhrZentrum received its own exit from Mülheim an der Ruhr with junction 20 “Mülheim-Heimaterde / Rhein-Ruhr Zentrum” on the A 40, as well as a corresponding driveway in the direction of Essen. After completion, the single-lane traffic direction of the Humboldtring around the RheinRuhrZentrum was changed to a clockwise direction especially for this purpose. There are more than 5000 free parking spaces, mostly in multi-storey car parks.
The tariff of the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr is valid on the U18 trams, on the 129, 130, 138, 145, NE9 and NE10 buses that stop at the RheinRuhrZentrum.
Flea market
Every first Sunday of the month there is a large flea and antique market in and around the RheinRuhrZentrum.
