The Pempelforter Straße underground station (abbreviation: Pfs, in the planning phase referred to as the Jacobistraße / Pempelforter Straße underground station) is an underground station on the Düsseldorf city railway . It is located in the course of the Wehrhahn Line (the third trunk line) in the city center district of the North Rhine-Westphalian state capital Düsseldorf . The train station, which was built below Schadowstrasse on March 15, 2008, opened on February 20, 2016 and has been in regular service since February 21, 2016. The underground station opens up the eastern end of one of the most important shopping streets in Düsseldorf with the two department stores of the Karstadt and Galeria Kaufhof chains . It is served by the U71, U72, U73 and U83 light rail lines. There is a link with other Düsseldorf local transport lines at two above-ground tram and bus stops .
location
The underground station was built at a central point in downtown Düsseldorf. The building is located under the street Am Wehrhahn between the side streets Oststraße and Cantadorstraße . To the south of the train station is the Wehrhahncenter and to the west of it the Schadowstrasse ends with numerous shops. The stop is the last underground station on the Wehrhahn Line in the direction of Grafenberg .
history
Originally, two separate underground stations were planned at the intersections of Pempelforter Straße / Am Wehrhahn and Jacobistraße / Am Wehrhahn. According to early plans, the latter should be the junction station with the 4th light rail line. For cost reasons, the two underground stations in the street Am Wehrhahn were merged into one station at the level of Oststraße. Against this decision by the Düsseldorf city administration, there was a great protest among the dealers on Schadowstrasse. The managing directors of the two large department stores Galeria Kaufhof and Karstadt on Schadowstraße protested against these plans. They criticized the now longer distances from the underground station to their department stores, which previously had a Jacobistraße tram stop directly in front of the main entrances .
Station complex
There are five stair entrances and two elevators along Am Wehrhahn street . In the western area, three stair entrances, supplemented by two escalators, lead to a large distribution level on Schadowstrasse and Oststrasse. There the elevator located further east and further stairs lead to the 4.50 meter wide and 90 meter long side platforms.
In the eastern area, two entrances were built, also connected by a common distribution level. These form the connection to the Pempelforter Straße tram stop.
A design competition was held in advance for the design of the Wehrhahn Line subway stations. Graduates of the Düsseldorf Art Academy were selected for the subway stations on the Wehrhahn Line. Heike Klussmann designed the Pempelforter Straße underground station under the motto: Surround.
traffic
The Pempelforter Straße underground station is on the third trunk line of the Düsseldorf light rail network. Since February 21, 2016, all four lines operating on this route have been serving the station. In addition to the transfer options between the individual tram lines, there are other transfer connections to two tram lines, at the Jacobistraße (707) and Pempelforter Straße (704) stops, which connect to the Düsseldorf local transport network.
The neighboring city and the north-eastern districts of Rath and Grafenberg can be reached via the line from Ratingen . The line branching off at the level of the employment agency connects the Gerresheim district . In the direction of the old town there is a connection to the Heinrich-Heine-Allee transfer point . In addition, the districts of Bilk , Volmerswerth , Wersten , Holthausen and Benrath located to the south and south-east are connected.
All light rail lines that run here are operated by the Düsseldorf Rheinbahn with low-floor light rail vehicles of the type NF8U .
