history

Marien Hospital in Düsseldorf (1902)

Catholic citizens of the city of Düsseldorf founded an association in 1864 with the task of building a new hospital called Marien Hospital Düsseldorf. Two years later, a piece of land, the part of Stockkamp Gut located west of the Düssel , was purchased in the center of the city and a brick factory was laid there to build the hospital . The architect August Rincklake took over the management of the construction of the Marien Hospital Düsseldorf and the foundation stone was laid in September 1867. It received its first sick on August 15, 1870, although the interior was not yet completely finished at that time. The Franciscan Sisters took care of the sick in the new house. There were wounded from the Franco-Prussian War , of whom around 800 were fed. The completion took place in the year 1872. The main building, with the address at that time Sternstrasse 91, was in an 11 acre garden and was executed in the style of the neo-Gothic . On June 1, 1881, the chapel of the Marien Hospital, built by the architects August Rincklake and Caspar Clemens Pickel , was inaugurated. In 1888, the original founding association of Marien Hospital Düsseldorf dissolved. The hospital was expanded from 180 to 300 beds in 1895. In 1902 the hospital had 350 beds in 24 halls and 40 rooms. In 1903 Georg Rody was appointed rector .

In 1945 the house was badly damaged after many air raids during the war. However, the reconstruction began immediately. This was discontinued in 1953. The board decided in 1959 to build a new hospital.

In 1966 the foundation stone was laid for the new Marien Hospital Düsseldorf. The completed hospital with 484 beds was inaugurated in 1970. In 1979, an innovative oncological center was set up as an interdisciplinary facility for all clinics involved in cancer care. In 1981 the east wing with an oncology department and nursing school was completed. In addition, it was connected to the University of Düsseldorf as an academic teaching hospital.

Today the Marien Hospital Düsseldorf is an academic teaching hospital with 439 beds and a recognized center for science and high-performance medicine. Marien Hospital Düsseldorf has been a member of the VKKD since 2007.
