A fibroid is a benign muscle tumor. Depending on the origin of the fibroid cells, fibroids are further divided into:
- Leiomyoma , myoma Levi cellulare (lat. Levis smooth, cellula cell), this consists of smooth muscle fibers forming sharply defined, and often lobed tumors. In clinical parlance, this tumor is called a uterine myoma . It is the most common benign tumor of the uterus .
- In addition to muscle fibers, fibroleiomyomas also contain abundant connective tissue .
- In addition to muscle cells, adenomyomas also contain gland cells, which in the case of a uterine myoma can be embryonic remains of Wolff's duct .
- Rhabdomyoma : Myoma striocellulare (gr. Rhabdos Streif) consists of striated muscle fibers of the heart muscle or skeletal muscle cells .
The malignant form of a muscle tumor is known as a leiomyo- or rhabdomyosarcoma .
