The Essen-Borbeck Süd stop is an operating point on the Mülheim-Heißen-Oberhausen-Osterfeld Nord railway line in the Schönebeck district of Essen . The stop has been served exclusively by the S9 line of the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn since 1998 .

Location and structure

Central platform with Regional Express RE14 passing through here without stopping

The operating point is located in kilometer  11.606 of the VzG route 2280 ( Oberhausen West  - Essen-Dellwig East  - Essen West ). The stop has a 76 centimeter high central platform with a length of 216 meters. Access is via two stairways at the north and south end of the platform with an exit to Altendorfer Strasse and Dreigarbenfeld. There is no barrier-free access.

To the west of the platform ran the former VzG lines 2186 to Essen West and the VzG line 2182 to Mülheim (Ruhr) -Heissen , of which track remains are present. The routes branched off in Essen-Borbeck or the former Schönebeck junction.

history

The connection from Mülheim-Heißen via Borbeck to Frintrop , opened in 1872, was supplemented in 1912 by a connection curve to Essen West. The line was separated at the newly established Schönebeck junction at the height of today's stop. The signaling equipment was operated from the Abzw signal box at the level of the branching point. In the decades that followed, traffic shifted to Essen West, so that the Essen Federal Railway Authority closed the section from Schönebeck in the direction of Mülheim-Heißen on May 1, 1969.

When the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn network was expanded, the newly established S1 and S3 lines were given a separate pair of tracks on the route from Duisburg Hbf via Mülheim (Ruhr) -Styrum to Essen Hbf . Operational management independent of the rest of the rail traffic was thus possible. At the time, the route from Essen West to Essen-Dellwig East was still used by mixed traffic with freight trains. A new connecting curve for freight trains was therefore created to separate the line at Essen West. The two routes were also separated at the Schönebeck junction, which was renamed Essen-Borbeck Süd when the curve was built. The signal box was abandoned during construction of the curve and the monitoring of the signal box Ebo the station Essen-Borbeck transmitted.

In 1980 both lines were electrified. Two years later, on May 22, 1982, the Essen-Borbeck Süd stop went into operation near the junction. The stop was initially served in the S-Bahn advance service from the N9 line between Bottrop Hbf , Essen Hbf and Langenberg (Rheinl) and Wuppertal Hbf . Since 1998, the line has been integrated into the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn network as the S9.

On May 31, 2000 the connecting curve from 1974 was closed. With the connection of the line to the ESTW Oberhausen-Osterfeld in 2007, the remaining block signals were removed.

Future development

The cities of Essen and Oberhausen are considering extending tram line 105 from its current terminus in Essen-Frintrop via Neue Mitte Oberhausen to the Oberhausen public transport route . It should thread into this and run alternately in the direction of Oberhausen Hauptbahnhof and Oberhausen-Sterkrade . However, the planned extension was rejected on March 8, 2015 in a council decision by the citizens of Oberhausen with 57 to 43 percent, with a participation of 23 percent. This means that the city of Oberhausen does not receive the financial subsidies provided for this project by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia . However, at the end of November 2015, the cities of Essen and Oberhausen registered the measure of extending tram line 105 from Essen-Frintrop to the Centro again in the public transport requirement plan of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, which applies from 2017 to 2030, and the plans were also included in this recorded. This means that from 2017 it will be possible to establish the tram connection between Essen and Oberhausen in the period up to 2030.
