Ehrenfeld (Bochum)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ehrenfeld is a quarter in the north of the Wiemelhausen district in Bochum . The quarter is directly connected to the southern city center and can be reached from there via Königsallee. Although Wiemelhausen belongs to the Bochum-Süd district, from a political point of view the Ehrenfeld belongs to the Bochum-Mitte district .

history

The Ehrenfeld was until the mid-19th century a barely-developed forests and meadows with few houses, which belonged to the municipality and Wiemelhausen popularly the name Small točke wore. The owner of the area was the house rake under the owner Otto von Schell . After the Franco-German War of 1870/71, the residents agreed on the new name Das Ehrenfeld for the region in March 1874 .

After lengthy negotiations towards the end of the century, von Schell left the building contractor Clemens Erlemann (1865–1937) properties between today's Oskar-Hoffmann-Straße and the Bergisch-Märkische railway line, so that the first buildings in a new district were built at the turn of the century. After Erlemann was able to acquire the remaining space in the house of Rechen in 1904, development work began in early 1905 for a first section of Königsallee and the construction of the first residential buildings. In quick succession a Catholic and Protestant church, the administration building of the General Knappschaftsverein (completion June 1910) and in 1908 a theater were built on the site. By the First World War , the entire development plan for the district was completed.

Erlemann wanted to create a middle-class district for middle and upper classes of the population. The starting point for this should be a square with star-shaped streets and a boulevard. The square, which was originally designed as the center of the Ehrenfeld, is today's distribution circle Romanus-Platz, the boulevard is the Königsallee. The streets of the Ehrenfeld have not grown, but have been planned according to urban development.
