The Rüttenscheider Stern underground station is an underground light rail station of the Essen Stadtbahn in the Rüttenscheid district of Essen . It is a station on the southern line, which is used by both the standard-gauge Essen tram and the meter-gauge Essen tram in a tunnel location. Another line of the Essen tram crosses above ground.
Location and structure
The underground station is located under Rüttenscheider Straße near the Rüttenscheider Markt. It has two tracks with side platforms. They can be reached via stairs, escalators and barrier-free with an elevator system through a total of four entrances. Since the tracks are used by both standard-gauge light rail vehicles and meter-gauge trams, the tracks are three- rail tracks . The platforms are built for high-floor operation, so that only high-floor vehicles can be used on the trams.
The Rüttenscheider Stern is the only point in the Essen network where an above-ground tram line crosses the tunnel.
history
The underground station was opened on June 1, 1986 as part of the extension of the southern route from Philharmonie / Saalbau to Messe / Bredeney . Before that, tram lines 101, 104, 107/127, 111 and 115 ran above ground from north to south, and tram line 106 from east to west. Lines 101 and 107/127 went to Bredeney, 104 and 115 to Stadtwaldplatz and Rellinghausen and the 111 to the fair . In the opposite direction, all lines run directly to the main station . The tram line 106, which runs from east to west, already ran tangentially via Moltkestrasse to the main station and to Altenessen or via Holsterhausen to Helenenstrasse. In the 1980s, the north-south connection was laid underground and built as a southern route along the B 224 between Philharmonie / Saalbau and Messe / Bredeney for the U11 tram lines and the 101 and 107 tram lines , which are located at Martinstrasse underground station branched out and was put into operation on June 1, 1986. The U11 tram runs to the exhibition center and the trams to Bredeney. With the opening of the tunnel, the U11 was extended to the fair and in return the tram line 111 was discontinued. The lines in the direction of Stadtwald / Rellinghausen were also shut down and switched to buses.
The east-west connection was not put underground. It was served by tram line 106 until mid-2015, which became tram line 101/106 when the timetable changed. 101 (Borbeck - Helenenstraße - Hauptbahnhof - Bredeney) and 106 (Altenessen - Hauptbahnhof - Rüttenscheid - Helenenstraße) were merged at the branches Borbeck – Hauptbahnhof and Hauptbahnhof – Rüttenscheid – Helenenstraße. The other two branches (Altenessen – Hauptbahnhof and Hauptbahnhof – Bredeney) became the new tram line 108, which serves the underground station in the tunnel.
service
The Stadtbahnhof is now served by the Essen Stadtbahn U11 line and the 108 tram line. During rush hour, there are also tram lines 107 in the underground station. Like the rest of the local public transport, it is served by the Ruhrbahn .
At the above-ground stop of the same name, there is a connection to the east-west tram line 101/106 of the Ruhrbahn. In addition, instead of the underground light rail and tram, two night bus lines serve the stop at night.

Planning
On the part of the city of Essen, there were various considerations to drive the southern route with a uniform system. For cost reasons, these plans have been put on hold.
