The Hirschlandplatz underground station (from 1977 to 1985 Wiener Platz underground station ) is an underground station of the Essen city railway . It is located in Essen city center near the Grillo Theater .
Location and structure
The Hirschlandplatz underground station is located between the Essen Hauptbahnhof and Berliner Platz underground stations . It is located under Hirschlandplatz near the Grillo Theater and to the west off Kettwiger Straße , the central pedestrian zone in Essen.
The underground station has a distribution level and an underlying station hall with two standard-gauge tracks with 80 cm high side platforms for high-floor vehicles. They can be reached via stairs and escalators through a total of two entrances.
history
Metro Station was named Wiener Platz at Pentecost in 1977 along with the original route I opened. In 1985 the original Wiener Platz was renamed Hirschlandplatz, and consequently the name of the underground station. It is named after the Jewish Hirschland family, who founded and operated the nearby, former Simon Hirschland Bank . She had to give up the bank in 1938 due to persecution during the Nazi era .
Initially, the Wiener Platz underground station was the terminus of the first Essen light rail line, which led via Essen Hauptbahnhof, Bismarckplatz, Savignystraße, Hobeisenbrücke and Wickenburgstraße to Mülheim-Heißen Kirche . The tunnel connection to the Berliner Platz underground station was opened on November 27, 1981 .
In 2008 the subway station was modernized with an investment of 1.2 million euros. This included new electrical installations, improved fire protection measures and the shortening of the formerly 110 meter long platforms to 90 meters in length, which improved the length of the escape routes. The redesign followed the concept of a theme station. For example, murals of the Grillo Theater, the Lichtburg , the Essen adult education center and historic trams were installed on the distribution level. In the station concourse, the history of the tram is shown using pictures and vehicle parts, such as an old pantograph. On December 21, 2008, the subway station was reopened with the color scheme of old trams in leafy green and ivory yellow.
service
The Hirschlandplatz underground station is served by all lines of the Essen Stadtbahn (U11, U17 and U18).
Trivia
Hirschlandplatz is the only stop in Essen's light rail network where all three light rail lines stop, but no trams.
