The Universität Essen underground station is an underground station of the Essen Stadtbahn in the north-western area of the Essen city center . It is located at the University of Duisburg-Essen .
history
The underground station at the university was opened on November 27, 1981 on the north-south route (Stadtbahn) as part of the extension of the existing U18 line and the opening of the U17 on the route from Hirschlandplatz to the university. Almost five years later, the north-south route from the university to Altenessen train station was continued.
Location and structure
The underground station is located on Bottroper Strasse / the corner of Grillostrasse directly on the university grounds. It has two tracks running in a north-south direction with a central platform that can be reached via stairs and escalators . The south exits lead directly into the university campus.
Between the Universität Essen underground station and the neighboring Berliner Platz underground station there is a sweeping system for turning light rail trains. The latter subway station also connects the university from the south.

The underground station is served by lines U11 and U17 of the Essen city railway. Like the rest of the public transport in Essen, these are operated by the Ruhrbahn .

The underground station does not only have an elevator and is therefore not barrier-free . EVAG is therefore planning to build an elevator in 2017.
Trivia
In 2003 the University of Duisburg and the University of Essen merged to form the University of Duisburg-Essen. It can be reached via the subway stations Universität Essen and Berliner Platz of the Essen Stadtbahn, from which the latter is also served by the Essen tram and the U18 line to Mülheim Hbf . There you can change to the Duisburg tram line 901 , which is also standard-gauge , and goes to the Duisburg campus. However, since the U18 and the 901 are completely incompatible with the exception of the gauge, there is no direct connection between the campuses in public transport, so the University of Duisburg-Essen operates an extra shuttle bus.
