The Martinstraße underground station is an underground light rail station of the Essen Stadtbahn in the Rüttenscheid district of Essen . It is a station on the southern line, which is used by both the standard-gauge Essen tram and the meter-gauge Essen tram in a tunnel location. In it, the southern stretch divides into two branches. In addition, it is a hub in public transport.
Location and structure
The metro station is located at the intersection of Rüttenscheider street corner Martin Street . It has two tracks with side platforms. They can be reached via stairs, escalators and barrier-free with an elevator system through a total of four entrances. Since the tracks are used by both standard-gauge light rail vehicles and meter-gauge trams, the tracks are three- rail tracks . The platforms are completely built for high-floor so that only high-floor vehicles can be used on the trams.
history
The underground station was opened on June 1, 1986 as part of the extension of the southern route from Philharmonie / Saalbau to Messe / Bredeney . Before that, the tram lines 101, 107 and 111 ran here above ground, with the 101 and 107 going to Bredeney and the 111 going to the exhibition center and branching out here. In the opposite direction, everyone went directly to the main train station . In the 1980s, the underground southern route was built parallel to the B 224 between Philharmonie / Saalbau and Messe / Bredeney for the U11 tram lines, as well as the 101 and 107 tram lines , which branch off here at the Martinstraße underground station into the branches to the exhibition center and to Bredeney . The U11 tram runs to the exhibition center and the trams to Bredeney. With the opening of the tunnel, the U11 was extended to the fair and in return the tram line 111 was discontinued.
service
The Stadtbahnhof is now served by the Essen Stadtbahn U11 line and the 108 tram line. During rush hour, there are also tram lines 107 in the underground station. Like the rest of the local public transport, it is served by the Ruhrbahn .
At the above-ground stop of the same name, there is a connection to several Ruhrbahn bus lines:
Planning
On the part of the city of Essen, there are various considerations to drive the southern route with a uniform system. For cost reasons, these plans have been put on hold.
