The Central Omnibus Station (ZOB) Velbert is a bus station in the North Rhine-Westphalian city ​​of Velbert and the main hub for local public transport. Velbert-Zentrum is of regional importance for transport. Numerous regional bus routes from the surrounding cities of Essen , Mettmann , Ratingen , Heiligenhaus , Wülfrath and Wuppertal end in Velbert city center. There they are supplemented in the feeder traffic by the lines of the Velbert local bus , which is responsible for fine distribution throughout the entire Velbert city area. Since the Velbert city center did not previously have a bus station, the bus lines in Velbert were routed through the city center in the ring traffic and ended at different stops and served each stop in the ring in only one direction. For the local transport companies of the Rheinbahn , the EVAG and the WSW mobil as well as the Velbert local bus, there were strongly overlapping ring traffic in the city center, which caused an unnecessarily high demand for vehicles but also too frequent a cycle and thus lost travel time. In addition, these circular traffic caused the problem that the accessibility of the buses in the city center was very confusing, as the bus stops were often only approached in one direction. This often means that the complete crossing of the pedestrian zone was necessary to get to connecting buses on the other side and that you had to change to buses in different directions at different stops. How complex that was showing two matrices in the rest of the article .

The new central bus station put an end to this confusing ring traffic and now leads the buses radially from the former post office stop in all directions. The complex and confusing transfer situation in Velbert-Mitte was replaced by a simple and clear transfer situation at the Velbert ZOB central bus stop .

Construction of the ZOB

The new ZOB Velbert was planned back in 2001. There were considerations to build the bus station as a replacement for the Postamt stop or at Willy-Brandt-Platz . The location of the Postamt stop won due to its more central location, but also because of its greater frequency. According to NVP Kreis Mettmann , the ZOB predecessor stop Velbert, Postamt with 5,717 people entering and leaving, 1,900 of them transferring, was the second busiest transfer stop in the Mettmann district after Ratingen Mitte . However, it was very small for its frequentation and not all buses in all directions could reach it. For these reasons, the Velbert, Postamt stop was redesigned as a bus station on the area of ​​the two parking lots opposite. After its completion, passengers need a maximum of five minutes to get to Velbert's shopping street. The area at the Nedderstrasse parking lot had long been intended for the central bus station. However, this initially failed due to the Velbert health center planned there. After its investment failed, the area was set as the planned area for the central bus station again.

The new ZOB has an area of ​​4500 m² and is a construction made of glass and steel and consists of five stop positions. There is a bus stop island in the middle and two side bus platforms as well as a stop position on Friedrich-Ebert-Straße. Its construction costs amounted to around 5 million euros, which are financed for the most part by state grants. In May 2014, NRW Transport Minister Michael Groschek welcomed the new major project with the groundbreaking ceremony. He spoke about funding:

“Actually, we would need a lot more money to be able to expand local transport. The bus and train services must not be inconvenient. It has to be more attractive. "

Construction began in May 2014 and was completed in September 2015. The ZOB Velbert was opened with a party on September 12, 2015. Commissioning then took place on September 13, 2015, from then on the new timetable will also apply .

After completion of the central bus station, the line network in Velbert was completely revised. There were considerations to improve both the inner-city and regional bus routes.

The bus line OV1, which ends in the city center at Willy-Brandt-Platz, has been shortened to the ZOB Velbert. In addition, it now turns over Oststrasse.

The bus line OV6, which serves as a direct connection to the Velbert-Langenberg train station and thus as an important feeder to the S-Bahn line S9 , has been reduced from hourly to 20-minute intervals. Three OV lines ran every hour to Langenberg and took 21 (OV6), 34 (OV7) and 45 (OV8) minutes to reach Langenberg - since the opening of the central bus station, the OV8 line no longer runs to Langenberg, but only to Kidney Court. Since all lines were coordinated with the S-Bahn at Langenberg station, they could not leave the Velbert post office every 20 minutes, so the connection to Langenberg was miserable. The now realized compression of the OV6 line to a 20-minute cycle is therefore a significant improvement for the connection to Langenberg.

In addition, the local bus routes now only run on Friedrich-Ebert-Straße. Oststraße is only served by line OV1.

Regional bus transport

The regional bus routes to Velbert had previously ended in the city center, but at various stops. Now they all start and end at the Velbert ZOB. In addition, they are now only available on Friedrich-Ebert-Straße. Oststraße is only served by the 746 bus.

Further planning

The bus lines 770 and 771, which connect Velbert with Heiligenhaus and Ratingen and serve as a feeder to the S6 at the Hösel and Ratingen Ost train stations in Ratingen, are to be overlaid so that they will not run one after the other as they are now, but in future at overlaid 10-minute intervals . ^[outdated]
