history

The hill sloping to the northeast was uninhabited until modern times and was named Friedbusch. Between the Kotten Wildenburg, Auf`m Schwanefeld, Höfgessiepen and Kattensiepen, which were founded in the 18th century, there was arable land until the 20th century. The name of the Nordpark district goes back to an adjacent forest area in the Hespertal , which was created as a local recreation area around 1930 by the Velbert Beautification Association and the Nordstädtischer Bürgererverein.

The Nordpark district was originally characterized by low-storey residential buildings. In 1974, four high-rise buildings with 63 apartments each on ten floors were built in the Nordpark to offer living space to the employees of the nearby August Engels foundry. After this foundry closed in the 1980s, the settlement began to decline. The houses were poorly used due to the increasing number of families moving away. After a disproportionate influx of foreign residents and tenants with low income levels, the Nordpark, which was often reduced to the four high-rise buildings, gained the reputation of a social hotspot in the 1990s. At the end of 2006, an urban development concept was presented that provided for the skyscrapers to be gradually demolished in order to use the resulting open space differently. The demolition of the first of the four high-rise buildings began in November 2007, and the last was dismantled at the end of 2012. Since then, numerous new buildings with smaller residential units have been built.
