Location of Katernberg in Wuppertal

Katernberg is a larger district of Wuppertal in the Uellendahl-Katernberg district . The district goes back to the high medieval Katernberg farm. A junction of the federal highway 46 is named after this district.

location

As the name suggests, Katernberg includes the area around a moderate elevation north of the Elberfeld district center. The elevation belongs to the Wuppertal Northern Heights and is part of the watershed between the river systems of the Wupper and the Ruhr .

District road 11, which goes back to a very old trade and coal route and today bears the name In den Birken , leads over the elevation as a high path . This street continues to the west as Pahlkestraße and to the east as Westfalenweg .

In the east of Katernberg the Nevigeser Straße leads south to the Wuppertal center ( Elberfeld-Mitte ) and in the opposite direction to Neviges . In the west of the district, coming from the south, the street In der Beek crosses the Höhenweg and leads north as Aprath Weg to the Wülfrath district of Aprath .

The streets Katernberger Straße , Katernberger Schulweg , Hosfelds Katernberg and Herberts Katernberg are named after the district. In the course of history, four farms and locations in the area were named Katernberg.

Transport links

As already mentioned, the Nevigeser Straße leads south to the Wuppertal center ( Elberfeld-Mitte ) and in the opposite direction to Neviges. In the direction of Elberfeld-Mitte the Nevigeser Straße leads to the Wuppertal-Katernberg A 46 junction , in the direction of Neviges it leads to the Wülfrath junction of the A 535 .

The nearest railway station can also be reached via Nevigeser Straße: Velbert-Rosenhügel on the Essen – Wuppertal railway line . This is served every 20 minutes by line S9 of the Rhein-Ruhr S-Bahn . The closest train station in Wuppertal's urban area is the Wuppertal-Steinbeck S-Bahn station .

Wuppertal-Katernberg is served by several WSW bus routes. Most of them are of inner-city importance and end in Katernberg Am Eckbusch . The express bus line SB69, as well as the bus routes 647, 649 are of cross-city importance and do not go to Eckbusch, but to Wülfrath (SB69), Velbert-Rosenhügel train station (647, 649), Velbert-Neviges (647, 649), Velbert -Mitte (649), Velbert-Langenberg (647) and Hattingen (647).

etymology

The etymological origin is explained with the derivation of " Caterincberg " or " Catirincberg " (= " Katharienberg ") after the cell consecrated to Saint Catherine , according to another version of the interpretation, Katernberg comes as " Katternberg ", in an early spelling, from the Old High German word " Chota "And the Middle High German" Kote "- which can be interpreted as Kate, small hut, small house .

history

The Katernberg farm was first mentioned in 1150 as " Caterincberg " in the revenue register of the Werden monastery . What is meant is the courtyard with this name west of the mountain path In den Birken , east of the road there was another Katernberg courtyard. Like Hof Elberfeld , Hof Eskesberg and Hof Beek, this eastern court in Katernberg was subject to the Archbishopric of Cologne .

The area west of Katernberg also belonged to Werden Abbey as early as 1150. The Steinberg farm located on it is one of the oldest documented farms in today's Wuppertal area. Only Hof Einern , Hof Hatzfeld , Hof Steinhaus and Hof Katernberg have a similarly old tradition that can be documented, even if other Wuppertal farms such as Wichlinghausen are much older in terms of settlement history.

The western Hof Katernberg was located in today's entrance area of the Pharmaceutical Research Center of Bayer HealthCare , which was built in the 1960s by Bayer AG and which was steadily expanded to its present size in the following years. With the growth of the research center, Hof Katernberg had to give way to the parking lot at the entrance to the site at the beginning of the 1970s. On the Topographia Ducatus Montani by Erich Philipp Ploennies , this farm is recorded in 1715 as Vogel's Caternberg . A bit to the west of it was a split, which was also named Katernberg and the southern part of which is still preserved today as the only one of the farms with the name Katernberg as an independent farm. Today it is used as a riding school ( 51 ° 16 ′ 9.2 ″  N , 7 ° 6 ′ 5.6 ″  E ).

In 1715, according to the Topographia Ducatus Montani, in addition to the two Katernberger courtyards, the following courtyards are located in the area of today's district: great anschlag , im Acker , In der Beek , An der brett , Dornberg , Eich , two Falckenbergs , bömgen , M.Rodt , aufm hüsg , H.Heide , Hülsbec , Cuculsberg , Am Lunsberg , on the Nüll , aufm Rom and on the Stras (at today's intersection Pahlkestraße / In den Birken / In der Beek / Aprather Weg ).

Later the farms with the name Katernberg were differentiated according to their owners. The old western courtyard is now called Lipges Katernberg or Lipkens Katernberg in the 1930s ( Lipges / Lipkens is a form of the first name Philipp ), the Katernberg east of the Höhenweg is now called Hosfeld Katernberg and has a split called Herberts Katernberg .

In the old days mining was carried out on the Katernberg, in addition to alum slate , hard coal was mined until 1840 .

A court school on the Katernberg is mentioned in the church protocols of the Reformed community in Elberfeld as early as 1600. This was relocated in 1802 in a house in the street Katernberger Schulweg (No. 35) and relocated again in 1859 in a new building. As a community school it was mentioned in the address book in 1965, the tradition is now being continued in the Kruppstraße elementary and secondary school .

In the late Middle Ages and the early modern period , Katernberg was part of the Bergisch Amt Elberfeld , which was dissolved in 1806 by the Napoleonic occupation and replaced by the canton of Elberfeld . In 1813, after the expulsion of the French, the Duchy of Berg passed to Prussia , which introduced its administrative structures.

In the first half of the 19th century, the area belonged to the Lord Mayor of Elberfeld in the Elberfeld district . At that time, the predominantly agricultural area was sparsely populated, and several farms bear the common name of Katernberg.

On the Prussian first recording, other courts are recorded, including the farms Berghaus , In den Birken , Hessen , Hölle , Am Hagen , Klotzbahn , König , Lehmbruch , Lipkenskothen , Ottenbruch , Pfaffenhaus , Ringelbusch , Am Steinberg , Theisbruch and An der Voßdelle .

In addition, there were the locations Am Räuber , Dreckloch and Am neue Hessen .

Up until the first third of the 20th century, there was a brick factory on the site of today's research center, which also mined the clay for its production here. Up until the end of the 1990s there were animal stables for parasitic research on the site of the old brickworks, but these were no longer used a few years before they were demolished. After the demolition, a new administration building for the management of research and development at Bayer HealthCare was built on the stables.

In the middle of the 20th century, more and more single and multi-family houses were built here, so that Katernberg is now largely built on.

Development

The Bayer HealthCare , a subgroup of Bayer AG , operates in the district on Aprather way an extensive research.

The Gasthaus Karpathen looks back on over 150 years of tradition, but the exact date of construction is not documented. It was known to be Johannes Raus' favorite pub during his time as Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia . Even as President of the Federal Republic, he has played one or two skat tournaments in the restaurant . After changing hands in 2007, it was renovated and reopened in 2008.
