Philipp ( Greek : Φίλιππος Philippos , Latinized : Philippus ) is a male given name , which is also used as a family name.

Origin and meaning of the name

The name comes from the Greek φίλιππος Phílippos "horse friend" (φίλος philos "friend", ἱππος hippos "horse"). It comes from the Macedonian kings from ancient Greece , who equipped a cavalry and thus became friends of horses . Until the High Middle Ages, the name was completely uncommon in Western Europe and only common in Byzantium and Orthodox countries. Its introduction in Western Europe goes to the Russian princess , Anne of Kiev back by marrying I. Heinrich Queen of France was. She gave this name to her son, who later became King Philip I , whose popularity among the people contributed to the spread of the name Philip.

In the first half of the 20th century the name Philipp was rarely used in Germany. From the early 1960s onwards, more and more boys were called that. From the end of the 1980s to the turn of the millennium, the name was often among the ten most frequently given first names each year. Since then, its popularity has decreased somewhat.
