Marcel Philipp (* 7. May 1971 in Aachen ) is a German CDU - politician and mayor of the city of Aachen. He is married, has two children and is the son of Dieter Philipp , the former president of the Central Association of German Crafts .

Professional background

Philipp was born in the Aachen district of Burtscheid . From 1981 to 1990 he attended the Episcopal Pius Gymnasium in Aachen . After completing basic military service in the Bundeswehr, he began an apprenticeship as a painter (restorer in the painting trade) in his parents' company in Burtscheid in 1991, which he continued in the third generation as managing partner and business economist in the trade . However, Marcel Philipp left this activity after he ran for the CDU in the local elections in 2009 and was elected Lord Mayor of the city of Aachen.

Political career

Marcel Philipp joined the CDU in 1989. From 1991 to 1997 he was chairman of the Aachen CDU district association Frankenberg . In 1994 he became a member of the housing and property committee of the city of Aachen and has been a member of the council of the city of Aachen since 1999, where he was the economic policy spokesman for the CDU parliamentary group. In 2002 he succeeded the late Manfred Bredohl on the board of the CDU parliamentary group. From 2004 to 2009 he was deputy chairman of the association assembly of the Aachen city region . In particular, he was chairman of the committee for economy, science and European affairs of the city of Aachen , member of the planning committee and the main committee as well as member of the supervisory boards of the energy supply and transport company Aachen , the Aachener Parkhaus GmbH (APAG) and the Aachener society for innovation and technology transfer (AGIT). Since 2007 he was deputy parliamentary group leader of the CDU parliamentary group in the city council. In the mayor election on August 30, 2009, Philipp was elected as the new head of Aachen with 43.3% of the votes, and narrowly prevailed over the SPD candidate Karl Schultheis (40.1%). On October 21, 2009, he took over the office of Lord Mayor of Aachen from his predecessor Jürgen Linden . On May 25, 2014, he was confirmed in office with 50.5%. He had made use of the option of shortening his six-year term in office to pool elections.

He suffered a political defeat in the Campusbahn project , for the reintroduction of a tram in the form of a modern light rail , which failed on March 10, 2013 due to a referendum .

In August 2019, he announced that he would not run for the mayor's election again in 2020 and that he would give up his post as mayor.
