Jürgen Linden (* 13. January 1947 in Aachen ) is a German politician of the SPD and was from 1989 to 2009 Mayor of Aachen.

Life

After graduation in 1966 at the Einhard Gymnasium in Aachen Linden studied until 1974 Law at the University of Cologne and received approval for the profession of 1,974 lawyer . In 1975 he was awarded a Dr. jur. PhD .

He has been a member of the SPD since 1970. In 1977 he was elected to the council of his hometown and was mayor of Aachen from 1984 to 1989.

After a red-green coalition came about in the local elections in 1989, Linden was elected honorary mayor on October 18, 1989 as the successor to Kurt Malangré ( CDU ). From October 12, 1995 to October 21, 2009 he held this office full-time. Linden publicly announced on April 25, 2008 that he would no longer be a candidate for the 2009 local elections. He was succeeded by Marcel Philipp (CDU).

Linden has played a decisive role in the economic structural change in the Aachen region and has promoted technology transfer and the founding of many new technology-oriented companies through the cooperation between the city of Aachen and RWTH , the Aachen University of Applied Sciences , the Chamber of Industry and Commerce and the Aachen Chamber of Crafts .

To strengthen regional cooperation, together with District Administrator Carl Meulenbergh, he founded the Aachen city region, an association of the city and district of Aachen as well as nine municipalities belonging to the district . The new construction of the RWTH campus in Aachen, the construction of the new Tivoli , the new construction of the synagogue and the renovation of the Aachen main station were all initiated by him. He suffered a political defeat in the “Bauhaus Europe” project, a planned cultural center at Katschhof , which failed on December 10, 2006 due to a referendum .

Jürgen Linden was also a member of the Presidium of the German Association of Cities and the Association of Cities in North Rhine-Westphalia for ten years, and from 2007 to June 12, 2010, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Alemannia Aachen GmbH .

Jürgen Linden has been a member of the board of directors for the award of the International Charlemagne Prize since 1989 and has been its chairman since 2010. Around the award ceremony, he initiated an extensive supporting program with open-air events, a forum and the Charlemagne Youth Prize awarded by the Charlemagne Prize Foundation. Linden is a member of the advisory board of the Aachen-Laurensberger Rennverein , member of the board of trustees of the Marienhospital in Aachen, chairman of the support association of the historical Crous collection, as well as a member of the extended board of the Ludwig-Forum for International Art.

He is married and has three children.
