The Bischöfliche Pius-Gymnasium is a high school in Aachen that is sponsored by the Diocese of Aachen and was founded in 1956 by Bishop Johannes Pohlschneider .
History and conception
The grammar school, named after Pope Pius X. , was founded in 1956 as an advanced grammar school by Bishop Johannes Pohlschneider and his vicar general, Prelate Anton Josef Wäckers.
When it was founded, it already had older roots, namely the Bischöfliche Konvikt built by Bishop Johannes Joseph van der Velden , later the Haus Eich study home . In this boarding school, mainly older elementary school students , mostly from the countryside and from families with little educational background, who missed the transition to a regular grammar school after grades 4 or 5, were given two-year "remedial courses" for the entrance examination into the 9th grade of Kaiser-Karls- Prepared for high school .
In 1956, the grammar school began its work as a six-class advanced school for boys (pure boarding school ), initially with grades 8 to 10. As an advanced grammar school , the school had the task of leading to the Abitur within six school years . The management of the school and the boarding school was in the hands of Msgr. Michael Molls.
Development towards a "normal" school
In 1965, 245 children attended the grammar school, which now also accepted external students. A sexta (5th grade) was also set up, so that the school now became an undergraduate high school.
In 1967 the clergyman Hans-Albert Höntges took over the management of the growing school, which from 1972 onwards, due to the large number of grammar schools in the country, no longer accepted any additional classes. In the same year Winfried Knoch from Bonn took over the post of headmaster.
In 1973 a new school building designed by Rudolf W. Sandhoff was built, which allowed three entrance classes.
In 1978 the last post-graduate students left the school, which was henceforth an elementary high school (grades 5 to 13). The now no longer needed Haus Eich boarding school was closed.
1991 until today
In 1991 girls were admitted to grades 5 and 11 for the first time. The school became four classes, temporarily in parts also five classes.
The growing number of schoolchildren made it necessary to build a third floor in 1993/94, which could be occupied at the beginning of the school year.
In 1995 Winfried Knoch retired after 23 years as headmaster at the Bischöfliches Pius-Gymnasium. His successor was Josef Els from Essen , who also left school at the end of the 2017/2018 school year. His successor on August 1, 2018 was Ulrich Brassel, who has been teaching German and music at the Pius-Gymnasium for 22 years.
In 1998 a school partnership with the Humboldt-Gymnasium Leipzig led to a German-German exchange. Other partnerships already existed with schools in France (Versailles and St. Brieuc), England (Gloucester) and the Czech Republic (Liberec).
In 1999, the company internship in grade 11 was replaced by a social internship . With this, the Pius-Gymnasium returned to an older tradition.
Since the 2003/04 school year there has been another Silentium . In the 2005/06 school year, it looked after 120 students in grades 5 to 10 on four days of the week.
In 2006 its 50th anniversary was celebrated with a series of festive events.
The Bischöfliche Pius-Gymnasium is meanwhile a school with more than 1000 students and more than 80 teachers.
