Heribert August

Heribert August (born April 27, 1947 in Kittlitz ) is a German Catholic priest who worked as a pastor in Burtscheid for three decades . In 2013 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for his charitable work in Aachen and Sarajevo .

Life

August came to Krefeld-Traar with his family as a child and, as a 15-year-old, to the Pius-Gymnasium in Aachen , where he graduated from high school. After studying theology, he was ordained a priest and was sent as a chaplain to Krefeld, Mönchengladbach and finally to Burtscheid, where he was also the CAJ diocesan chaplain. At the request of the Burtscheid parish of St. Michael , he was appointed pastor in 1983 and remained so until his retirement in 2012. During this time, St. Michael became with St. Apostles , and later also with the Sacred Heartmerged. In his last years of office, all Burtscheid parishes were amalgamated into one large parish with the patronage of St. Gregory of Burtscheid .

Since 1984 August has been chairman of the board of trustees of the Marienhospital Aachen Foundation ; During this time he drove forward the expansion and modernization of the facility. His commitment to Bosnia began when he met a priest from the region. During the war in Yugoslavia he organized a large-scale relief operation. After the war, with the help of craftsmen from Aachen and many donors, he supported the reconstruction of Sarajevo and various social projects as well as the renovation of the heavily damaged Sacred Heart Cathedral . In 2003 Archbishop Vinko Puljić appointed him Dome of Honor of the Cathedral, in 2010 Benedict XVI awarded him . at Puljić's instigation the title of papal honorary prelate ( monsignor ). On April 13, 2013, he received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon from the Lord Mayor of Aachen, Marcel Philipp .
