Vinko Cardinal Puljić (born September 8, 1945 in Priječani , Yugoslavia ) is Archbishop of Vrhbosna ( Sarajevo ).

Life

Vinko Puljić completed his school days and his theological studies at church schools in Zagreb and Đakovo . On June 29, 1970 he received the sacrament of ordination for the diocese of Banja Luka and then worked as a chaplain in Banja Luka until 1973 .

From 1973 to 1978 he was a pastor in Ravska , from 1978 to 1987 he worked as a spiritualist at the Zadar seminaries . He regularly organized retreats , retreats and days of reflection. He then led the parish in Bosanska Gradiška as a pastor for three years . In 1990 he was briefly sub-rain of the seminary in Sarajevo.

On November 19, 1990, Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Vrhbosna . The Pope personally donated his episcopal ordination to him on January 6th of the following year, co- consecrators were the official in the Vatican State Secretariat , Archbishop Giovanni Battista Re , and the then secretary of the Congregation for Bishops , Archbishop Justin Francis Rigali .

On November 26, 1994, Pope John Paul II accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Chiara a Vigna Clara in the college of cardinals . At that time, at 49, he was the youngest member of the College of Cardinals. He is also a member of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue .

Vinko Cardinal Puljić was chairman of the Bishops' Conference for Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1995–2002 and 2005–2010 . During the Bosnian War he provided humanitarian aid , even at his own risk. Puljić gained international fame through his commitment to peace.
