Fritz Philipp (born October 5, 1903 in Breslau ; † January 27, 1981 ) was a German trade unionist . He was first chairman of the central board of the metal industry union in the FDGB .

Life

Philipp, son of a working-class family, attended elementary school and completed an apprenticeship as a lathe operator in Breslau. He later worked in this profession in his hometown and from 1935 to 1945 in Magdeburg . In 1921 he joined the German Metalworkers Association and took on voluntary functions there. In 1922 he joined the SPD , but joined SAP in 1931 .

After the end of the war, Philipp joined the KPD in 1945 and became a member of the SED in 1946 . 1945/46 he was chairman of the works council at " Krupp-Gruson " in Magdeburg, 1946/47 chairman of IG Metall in Magdeburg. From 1947 he worked as vice chairman and from October 1949 as first chairman of the central board of IG Metall. In February 1950 he was removed from his position and reprimanded by the Central Party Control Commission of the SED. Excessive alcohol consumption, the “unrestrained” spending policy of the IG Metall central board, but also Philip's behavior towards so-called “all-trade unionists” were cited as reasons for the dismissal.

In 1950/51 Philipp was head of material supply in the VEB steel and rolling mill "Wilhelm Florin" in Hennigsdorf , then from 1951 to 1953 the main consultant in the special construction team in Berlin. From 1953 to 1957 he was director of work at VEB Hochbau Berlin-Friedrichshain, then from 1957 to 1964 director of work at VEB vehicle equipment. From 1964 to 1966 he was finally secretary of the SED company party organization in the council of the Berlin-Friedrichshain district . Most recently he was chairman of the Berlin-Weißensee district board of the Society for German-Soviet Friendship for many years . Philipp died at the age of 77 and was buried in the Friedrichsfelde central cemetery.

Philipp was awarded the Fritz Heckert Medal and the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze (1973).
