Herbert Doenitz

Herbert Dönitz (born November 12, 1920 in Halle (Saale) ) is a former German FDGB functionary. He was chairman of the central board of the metal industry union .

Life

Dönitz, the son of a painter, attended elementary school , completed an apprenticeship as a mechanic from 1935 and worked in this profession until 1939. In 1939 he was drafted into the Reich Labor Service , then in the same year for military service in the Wehrmacht . From May to September 1945 Dönitz was a US prisoner of war .

In 1945/46 he worked as an electrical mechanic in Eßlingen am Neckar and Kamenz . In 1945 he joined the FDGB and in 1946 the SED . From 1946 to 1948 he was the area secretary of IG Metall in Kamenz. In 1949 he became second chairman of IG Metall. From 1951 to 1954 he was chairman of the central board of IG Metallurgie. Between 1954 and 1957 Dönitz studied at the party college at the Central Committee of the CPSU in Moscow . He completed his studies with a degree in social science . From 1957 to 1960 he acted as chairman of the central board of IG Metall. From 1951 to 1960 Dönitz was also a member of the FDGB federal executive committee, from 1952 to 1960 also a member of its executive committee. From 1960 to 1963 he worked as a mechanic and labor director at VEB Funkwerk Köpenick . From 1963 he headed the International Relations Department at the FDGB Federal Board.

At the beginning of October 1985, as deputy head of department in the State Secretariat for Labor and Wages at the GDR Council of Ministers, he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver on the occasion of his 65th birthday .
