Hartwig Bugiel

Hartwig Bugiel (born March 7, 1943 in Neuwied ; died September 13, 2015 in Wilhelmshaven ) is a German former FDGB functionary. In 1989/90 he was the last chairman of IG Metall in the GDR .

Life

Bugiel, born and raised in West Germany, learned the trade of machine fitter and worked in the profession. In 1964 he moved to the GDR and got married there. He worked as a machine fitter at VEB Carl Zeiss Jena until 1970 . He became a member of the FDJ and the FDGB in 1964 and the SED in 1968 . From 1965 to 1970 he completed an evening course at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena , graduating as an engineer for technology and automation. He became secretary of the FDJ industrial group management of VEB Carl Zeiss Jena and as such took part in the 10th World Festival of Youth and Students in East Berlin in August 1973 . From 1974 he worked as a research assistant, later as dispatch manager and production director. In 1985 he was elected chairman of the works union management (BGL) of the VEB Optischer Präzisionsgerätebau in the VEB Carl-Zeiss-Jena combine and confirmed again in 1989.

On November 26, 1989, he was elected chairman of the central board of IG Metall in a first open vote. After the resignation of the FDGB federal executive board and the labor secretariat previously headed by Annelis Kimmel in December 1989, he was a member and press spokesman of the preparatory committee for the extraordinary FDGB congress. On April 9, 1990, at the 12th Central Delegates Conference in Bernau, he was confirmed in his position as chairman of IG Metall in a voting vote with a two-thirds majority. At the last extraordinary central delegate conference of IG Metall on 5./6. October 1990 in the International Youth Center at Bogensee the delegates decided to dissolve their organization on December 31, 1990. His term of office also ended.
