Hans Schmidt (born January 17, 1923 in Klaber , Güstrow district ) is a former German trade unionist . He was chairman of the central board of the metal industry union in the FDGB .

Life

Schmidt, son of a working-class family, attended elementary school in Rostock . He was a member of the SAJ (" Red Falcons ") from 1928 to 1933 . Schmidt learned the trade of metal aircraft builder from 1937 to 1940. From 1942 he did military service with the flak and at the same time studied aircraft construction at the Stettin Engineering School . In 1943 he had to break off his studies and do military service.

After the end of the war he was a machinist in Rostock from 1945 to 1947 . In 1946 he joined the SPD , SED and the FDGB. From 1947 he was chairman of the works council and member of the Mecklenburg state board of IG Metall. In 1948/1949 he attended a trade union and party school. From 1949 he was a member of the central board of IG Metall and its secretariat, from September 1952 chairman of the central board of IG Metall.

On August 10, 1953, Schmidt was replaced as chairman of IG Metall - because of his "opportunistic retreat" and because of his "conciliatory, capitulant attitude" before the "fascist provocateurs" of June 17 - and expelled from the central executive committee. He was expelled from the SED in September 1953 because he had "developed from a petty-bourgeois careerist to a double-faced man and an open enemy of the working class". In October 1953 he was expelled from the FDGB.

After losing his office, Schmidt was a machine fitter at the Neptun shipyard in Rostock, where he was temporarily assistant to the works manager. In 1954/55 the exclusions from the SED and FDGB were lifted. From 1956 Schmidt worked in the VEB Fischkombinat Rostock .
