Limnobium is a genus of plants in the frog-bite family(Hydrocharitaceae).
description
Limnobium species are perennial, herbaceous aquatic plants . Rhizomes are absent. The runners float on the surface of the water or hang under water. They are short, unbranched, and have roots or not. The leaves are stalked and basal, floating on the water surface or protruding from it. The leaf blade is elliptical to circular. Their base is kidney-shaped to heart-shaped, the end blunt to pointed. The midrib has no depressions along its sides. The blade is uniformly colored throughout, there are no spines on its underside.
The inflorescence is zymös, sessile or with a short stalk. The spathe is not winged. The genus is monoecious . The flowers are stalked and appear above the surface of the water. The petals are greenish white to yellowish. In male flowers, the stamens are fused at least halfway along their length. The anthers are elongated. In the female flowers, the ovaries are single-chambered, but apparently have 6 to 9 chambers. The 3 to 9 styles have two columns almost to the bottom. The fruits are ellipsoidal to spherical, smooth to ribbed and unevenly bursting. The seeds are ellipsoidal and covered with blunt, cylindrical hairs.
Occurrence
The area of the genus includes North, Central and South America.
