Limnobium spongia , also known in German as the North American frog bite, is a species of the Limnobium genusin the frog-bite family(Hydrocharitaceae).

description

Limnobium spongia is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of up to 50 centimeters. The roots are branched. The buds of the stolons have 10 or more roots. The leaves float on the water or protrude from it in dense vegetation. The leaf blade measures 1 to 10 × 0.9 to 7.8 centimeters. The primary leaf veins form an angle of 30 ° to 80 ° with the midrib. The male flowers usually have 9 to 12, rarely up to 18 stamens. The female flowers have 3 or 4 petals. The ovary is apparently 6 to 9 chambers, there are 6 to 9 ovary compartments. The stylus are in two columns almost to the base. There are 200 ovules. The fruits are 4 to 12 millimeters in diameter.

The flowering period extends from summer to autumn.

After fertilization, the stems of the flowers bend downwards. As a result, the fruits inevitably develop under the water surface.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.

Occurrence

The species is only found in the eastern United States. Here she can be found in the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. It grows in the slowly flowing water of rivers, oxbow lakes, lakes or stranded on banks at altitudes of 0 to 100 meters.
