Artur Baumann

Artur Baumann (also Arthur Baumann ; born February 10, 1905 in Gera , † August 18, 1991 in Berlin ) was a German politician ( SED ) and trade unionist . He was from 1950 to 1952 Chairman of the FDGB -Landesvorstandes Saxony .

Life

Baumann was born the son of a tailor in Gera. After attending primary school , he did an apprenticeship as a baker and worked in this profession, later as a worker in a worsted yarn factory and as a transport worker. In 1921 he joined the German Textile Workers' Association . In 1923 he became a member of the Communist Youth Association of Germany , in 1926 a member of the Communist Party of Germany . After the " seizure of power " by the National Socialists in 1933, Baumann was imprisoned several times. From 1937 he worked as a fine grinder. In 1945 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht and became an American prisoner of war .

In 1946 he became a member of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) and helped to build the Association of Metal Workers in Leipzig . From 1946 he was second chairman, from 1948 to 1950 first chairman of the state board of Saxony of IG Metall . After studying at the party college "Karl Marx" at the Central Committee of the SED in 1949/1950, Baumann became a member of the SED state leadership in Saxony, chairman of the FDGB state executive committee for Saxony and a member of the Saxon state parliament (until the dissolution of the states in the GDR in 1952). From 1952 he was a member of the Leipzig District Assembly , in 1953 he acted as acting chairman of the central board of IG Metall. From 1950 to 1955 he was a member of the FDGB federal executive committee, where he was head of department in 1952/1953. From 1953 he was secretary and member of the executive committee of the central board of IG Metall / Metallurgie and IG Metall.

From 1958 to 1960 he worked in the trade unions and social policy department in the SED Central Committee . In 1970 he retired and became chairman of the working group of merited union veterans of IG Metall.

His urn was on the Central Cemetery in Berlin-Friedrichsfelde in the graves plant for the victims and persecuted by the Nazi regime buried.
