Hans Philipp (geologist)

Hans Philipp (born June 23, 1878 in Berlin ; † September 1, 1944 in Karthaus near Trier) was a German geologist . He was a professor at the University of Cologne .

Life

Philipp received his doctorate in Heidelberg in 1904 (palaeontological-geological studies from the area of ​​Predazzo) on the Alpine Triassic of the Dolomites near Predazzo . He completed his habilitation in Greifswald in 1908, where he was a private lecturer and, from 1913, an associate professor. In 1923 he became a full professor in Cologne as the first professor at the Geological-Mineralogical Institute founded in 1919.

In August 1912, Hans Philipp was one of the 34 founding members of the Paleontological Society .

In 1914 he was one of the editors of the scientific results of the trial expedition (for an Antarctic expedition) by Wilhelm Filchner to Spitzbergen (1910).

He is the first to describe various species of the Alpine Triassic .
