Werner Philipp (born March 13, 1908 in Kosel near Breslau ; † June 13, 1996 in Berlin ) was a German historian . For many years he held the chair for Eastern European History at the Free University of Berlin.

Life and activity

Werner Philipp was the son of the elementary school teacher Fritz Philipp and his wife Martha, née Jungfer. After attending school, he studied history in Breslau, Freiburg and Berlin. In 1934 he received his doctorate from Richard Salomon on Ivan Pereswetow . In 1935 he succeeded Leo Loewenson, who had been removed from his post for racist reasons by the National Socialists, as Otto Hoetzsch's assistant at the Institute for Eastern European History and Regional Studies at Berlin University. Despite his negative attitude towards National Socialism, he retained this position under Hoetzsch's successor, Überberger. In 1940 he completed his habilitation here. There followed a few years as an associate professor in Königsberg, before he was drafted into military service in August 1942.

After the war, Philipp first conducted research in Mainz , where he was appointed to the newly created Extraordinariat for Eastern European History in May 1946. In 1951 he became full professor for Eastern European History at the Eastern European Institute of the Free University of Berlin. Since the summer of 1952 he offered regular courses. He retained his positions as professor and institute director until his retirement in 1972. As part of this activity, he set up a new seminar and launched a new specialized journal with research on Eastern European history .
