Hans Bahlow

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans Bahlow (born November 21, 1900 in Liegnitz , † December 16, 1982 in Hamburg ) was a German name researcher .

Life

The son of a pastor studied German, theology and Semitic languages . In 1923 he received his doctorate at the University of Jena with the thesis Studies on the oldest history of Liegnitz family names . From 1927 to 1950 he worked at the Rostock University Library .

Bahlow wrote, among other things, the German Name Lexicon - family and first names explained according to their origin and meaning and was a lecturer for name research and manuscript studies at the University of Hamburg .

criticism

Bahlow's interpretations of the content of the river and place names in Germany, which he almost invariably leads back to "water", "swamp" or "moor", are generally rejected in science today. The reason for this is the fact that many of his cited roots of words referring to wetlands are completely unfounded and are suspected to have been invented by Bahlow.
