Paul Matthies (born January 12, 1911 in Danzig , † 1970 ) was a German football player.

In his club career, Matthies played as a middle runner for SC Preußen Danzig . With the Black and Whites he won the regional championship in the Gauliga Ostpreussen-Danzig in 1934 after two finals against SV Hindenburg Allenstein and thus qualified for the first time for the finals for the German championship . Since he and his teammates only achieved a 1-1 draw against Viktoria Stolp on April 29th . The other final round matches against Beuthener SV and Viktoria 89 Berlin were lost. In the rounds of 1935/36 and 1936/37 the championship in the district class Danzig was successful - against BuEV, KS Gedania, Schutzpolizei, SV Neufahrwasser, Victoria Elbing - but one could not assert oneself in the finals in East Prussia. In the war round 1940/41, the tall middle runner with Prussia Danzig could again participate in the final round of the German championship. He came with the team from Preußenplatz Bischofsberg at least three draws against LSV Stettin and Vorwärts Rasensport Gleiwitz. In total, the long-time defense chief of Prussia Danzig has made 10 finals for the German championship with one goal.

After Matthies had competed several times for the Balten team - in the federal cup against southeast Germany (October 12, 1930), northern Germany (October 11, 1931), Brandenburg (October 9, 1932) - he was appointed to the national team by Reich coach Otto Nerz and completed two international matches: on September 15 in a 5-0 win against Estonia and on October 13 in a 3-0 win over Latvia , both played in Königsberg . His debut in the national team was based on a "double game day" of the DFB selection. The man from Danzig played alongside the established experts Reinhold Munzenberg and the captain Karl Hohmann against Estonia as a middle runner and at the same time Ludwig Goldbrunner acted as head of defense of the national team in the 1-0 success of the A selection against Poland in Wroclaw. In his second international match four weeks later, on October 13th, Fritz Ruchay, the second player from the East Prussian region , made his debut in the national team.

The trained electrical engineer from the port and trading town on the Baltic Sea was never called into the DFB squad afterwards, but he still played nine competition games in the Reichsbund Cup from 1935 to 1941 in the ranks of the East Prussian district selection . He met players like Erwin Seeler (1935/36; Nordmark), Hans Appel (1935/36; Brandenburg), Erich Hänel (1937/38; Saxony), Heinz Flotho (1938/39; Lower Saxony), Hans Rohde , Herbert Wojtkowiak (1940/41; Nordmark) and formed the runner row of the selection of East Prussia in several games together with the two outside runners Kurt Baluses and Gerhard Reich .
