Federal Cup

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bundespokal (until 1918 Kronprinzenpokal ) was a German soccer competition in which the teams selected from the regional associations of the German Football Association (DFB) competed against each other in the cup mode. After the regional associations under pressure from the Nazis had dissolved in 1933, was first of the same year Reichsbund Cup organized at which the representative teams of Sportgaue (some were called in 1939 "sports fields") of the Reich Federation for Physical Education took part. He was discontinued in 1942 due to the war.

In 1949/50 there was the first national cup , in which the national teams from the DFB area (with contract players ) and the GDR participated. Since 1950/51 only the amateur teams of the national associations were allowed, the competition was accordingly called "Amateur Country Cup of the DFB". From then on, the GDR no longer reported any teams.

In 1969/70 the DFB tried to revive the former national cup, but the DFB regional cup hardly attracted public or media interest. The competition was not continued after the preliminary round.

trophy

The trophy was donated by Crown Prince Karl Friedrich at the Bundestag of the DFB from February 1 to 2, 1908 . It is silver and has two extra-long handles . At the top at the edge are the areas (associations) numbered by name and in Roman numerals. Below it, separated by lines, reads: His Imperial and Royal Highness Wilhelm, Crown Prince of the German Empire and of Prussia (this is written in German Kurrentschrift ) donated this cup in 1908 as a challenge prize for football competitions between the representative teams of the regional associations of the German Football Association (in block letters).

Participating associations until 1933

The two last-named associations merged in 1911 to form the Association of Brandenburg Ball Game Clubs .

particularities The place on which the national cup final of 1922 between North and South Germany took place, the sports field of the Eimsbüttel TV on the Hoheluft , was partly on Hamburg , partly on Prussian territory and had an official capacity of 28,000 spectators. According to contemporary newspaper reports, however, 35,000 tickets are said to have been issued and there are supposedly as many as 44,000 visitors to the stadium. The audience felt like “herrings crammed together” to these reports, and “real battles for the possession of standing and seats” were reported. The spectators who came later tried to position themselves between the barrier and the playing field, which blocked the view of those already present and led to arguments. A strong police presence had to clear the field to allow the kick-off. After the game was clearly decided, the first spectators migrated prematurely and chose the shortcut across the field, which led to another interruption. After the game, the condition of the field with "crushed barriers and broken benches" was desolate. As a result, the side effects of this game led to the postponement of the international game against Hungary scheduled for July 2 in Hamburg to Bochum.
